1st ever trip to Whaleback after driving by so many times like lots of us here!
It was their opening wknd and they had $15 all you could ski the entire wknd. My 'home' mtn is Saddleback but I needed a break from the long drive and decided to stay home this wknd and ski local.
With only 1 route from the top open I'm unsure how many folks actually skied both days. We saw a lot of passholders though which was nice to see given the resurgance of the place.
We got there about 10:50AM. The parking and lodge is very convenient to the hill...hardly any walking required.
You buy your lift tickets from the snack bar/cafeteria as the girl running the normal ticket window was pulling double duty.
Hopped on the old double and up we went. As some have mentioned previously, the lift line (Face) is pretty steep here.
Ok, so they were saying 4 trails open but basically it was 1 route with 4 sections of the trail. Whaleback to Upper Spout to Bougainviella to Lower Spout. All Blue Squares.
Conditions were generally a mix of PP and LSGR with some scratchy spots mixed in as well. Overall though, the coverage was good, no bare spots to be found and the snowmakers should be commended for a job well done.
It's hard to review the entire mtn as only this one trail was open but as best I could tell in looking down closed trails, this place has some sneaky steep spots. The terrain seems generally ledgy with drop, flat, drop type topography.
It seems to ski bigger than Pats (also at 700' vert) as it has much more continuous vertical and you avoid the annoying runout and carry good speed right to the lift.
We did about 10 runs before heading in for a couple of Long Trails in the rustic pub. Everyone we encountered was friendly, the tickets are cheap and the terrain is very under-rated for a mtn this size.
I wish Whaleback all the best....some natural snow getting the diamonds and glades open will really make this place shine.
I will definately be back once everything is open.
