When did Glade/tree skiing become a "big thing"

What he said - I remember skiing somewhere in western Mass. in the mid to late 60's that had a great glade run one year and when I went back the next season all the trees had been cut down, just an open slope. The story I got at the time was that there had been an accident and to avoid any more liability issues they just cleared out the trees. I lived in Pa. at the time and also recall a few glades down there for a season or two before they were blocked off or removed.
