IMHO Driving over Lowell Mtn has some of the best views in Vermont.

Nice picture. Explain the view. Which peak is that?

Smuggs is my vote, except on crowded days!

We've really enjoyed getting to know Smugglers' Notch lately and I think intermediates would enjoy it. The only thing is I will not ski there on a busy weekend or holiday. I did that once years ago and got stuck in terrible, terrible lift lines. This is because they don't have high-speed lifts--they are old school there. But, if it's not a peak weekend or holiday, it's really fun, and close to where you are staying.

Interestingly enough, I find areas that do have high speed lifts generally have longer lines than places with fixed grips only. From what I have heard, Smuggs is the rare exception of a NNE ski area without high speed lifts and long lines. Perhaps Mad River Glen is the only other such mountain in NNE.

I have a trip planned to northern VT in late February...will have a small group of intermediate to advanced skiers/riders with possibly a few novices thrown in.

Where would be the best ski area/resort to go to? I need to keep the costs down as much as possible, we already have a place to stay, and nightlife is not a factor.

flatlands of Mass.
Went to Jay...conditions were quite suboptimal because of the nair/freeze but the grooming made the trails skiable and the group had a very good time nevertheless.

Jay does have intermediate, beginner glades all over the place. It is a great place for someone just venturing off the trail to really get confidence in the woods.

you don't mention if it's a day trip, or overnight, but.... consider Okemo, Magic Mtn, Burke, Bolton Valley, Smugglers Notch...
