Date(s) Hiked: 6/15-6/18/06
Trails(s) Hiked: Several
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Conditions: warm, somewhat buggy
I had a great 3 days hiking to several waterfalls in the White Mtn area. Just alittle rain on Thursday night. Camped at the Sugarloaf 2 WMNF campground in the Zealander Rec Area. Worked out great, a hand pump for water and outhouses for $16 a night.
I brought both my little point-shoot digital camera and of course my film cameras. I will be posting some photos all taken with the digital camera. My slides are being processed than they have to be edited and scanned. Hopefully, they will yield better images than the digital but in all honestly I was quite pleased with the results with this little camera that requires no film...amazing!
The diferent falls I had on my list were in all corners of the area, Pinkham Notch, Crawford Notch, Franconia Notch, Kancamagus Hwy and the backside of Cannon just south of Franconia Village. Unfortunately I forgot the dig camera on two of the falls.
I left Cumberland Center in the morning, driving Rt 113, took about 1.5 hrs to get to Conway. I wanted avoid North Conway but had to find a tripod part at the camera shop. What a mess that town has become and it always seems they are doing major road construction thru town. I was so glad to get away and headed up the Kanc Hwy to get to Avalanche Falls in the Flume Gorge. Since it was Thursday it was not very busy. The last time I went into the Flume was over 40 years ago. Hiked thru the Gorge than partway up the Liberty trail, about 3 miles total. It was now about 5PM so I headed up the campground to set up.
One of the many cool things about the Whites is that there many camgrounds. Sugarloaf Campground is between Bretton Woods and Twin Mountain. Since I was on my own the first night I took the opportunity to have a steak cooked over the open fire...man, was that good. I then parked at that over photographed location with the view of the Pres and the Mt Washington Hotel. Finally got some decent light the 3rd night.
The next morning(Fri) I headed over to Pinkham Notch, again hoping to beat the weekend crowds. It was busy but not too crowded. I was headed up the TR trail to photograph Crystal Cascades, it's less than a half-mile, easy hike. It was impressive. The dig camera did a decent job of capturing it but it's the slides I am wanting to see.
Next headed up to Wildcat for a few shots then it was down to Glen Ellis Falls. Speaking of Wildcat, I did visit and photograph Black Mtn, Cannon and Shawnee Pk as well. Those images are at http://www.snowjournal.com/page.php?cid=topic9438
I have always liked Glen Ellis Falls. for one thing it looks just like Tower Falls
in Yellowstone. Even after hiking down some slippery rocks I could not get away from the spray due to amount of water going over the falls. It's less than a mile from the parking lot, easy hike with some stairs. After lunch I headed over to hike up to Bridalveil Falls, on the backside of Cannon and south of Franconia Village. What a view of Lafyette from that town. About half-way between FV and Kinsman Notch you turn onto Coppermine Rd, park the car and start walking. Estimate from the parking lot it is about 4 miles RT. Easy hiking with last mile somewhat moderate.
It's now around 11AM, I rarely photograph between 11-3...bad light but as I was headed thru Crawford Notch I couldn't resist stopping at Silver Cascades. After all, any waterfalls that drops 640 ft deserves some respect even if it's along the road. Once again after dinner I cruised the short distance to Bretton Woods watching another day end about 8:30 with "nothing special" light.
The next morn(Sat) I packed up the campsite and headed towards Sabbaday Falls, a short hike from the Kanc Hwy. Again easy hike and the falls was like all the others, spectacular. I headed back to Conway, took 30 min to get thru that gridlock, so happy when I got to Fryburg.
All in all a great 3 days. BTW, I think I saw more bikers than I have ever before seen, there was also a Mini-Coup rally. They are cute but I almost stepped on one in the Sabbaday Falls parking lot...lol. There are a couple of extra elements in a couple of the photo's. Just trying to inject some humor.
I was disappointed there were no people in the photos. They help visualize the scale of the falls. I should have the good shots posted in a couple of weeks. Would love to get some comments.
