Hi!

I'm planning a trip out to Gore and Whiteface this winter. It will be my first time skiing in New York and I've heard a lot of good things about both these mountains.
Anyone have any good advice on what month is best to ski, cheap places to stay and the best trails to ski both inbounds and out?
I have read many TR for both Gore and Whiteface and I have to say I'm really impressed.

Welcome to the Forum - whenever i ski Gore i stay in Lake George or Queensbury ,about 35-40 minutes away. More to do there than staying in North Creek area at the Mtn

Usually stay at either Days Inn in LG or Sleep INN or Ramada in Queensbury . Nice pools , jacuzzis and breakfast . Sleep Inn is the best and has a really good breakfast

Whiteface has Lake Placid which is awesome . We usually stay at either Golden Arrow or across the street at Mountain Inn i think its called ,These are in town on Main street where all the action is -- great restaurants, boutiques , stores and a FREE shuttle at your doorstep to the mtn approx 10 miles distant

Late January thru mid march is usually good at Both mtns

have fun

whiteface is usually open 100% by the end of January. The slides usually open in March.

IMO th best hotel in town for the money is the Pines. It is the old St Maritz. The new owners have put a lot of sweat equity into it and it looks great. They are a family so are very child friendly.

We hit WF 2-3 times a year and stay at the Townhouse Lodge in LP. Large rooms, kitchenette, reasonable rates, no pool/hot tub or restaurant. Pretty much no frills, but great rooms for skiers, no steps, park in front of your room, shuttle access. We generally head up in Jan and Feb, and I squeezed in an April trip last year. Prez day week is Empire State Games, and they make a boatload of snow. Downside is the hill and hotels charge holiday prices.

We have stayed at the Town House Lodge several times and it is clean and reasonable. Additionally, the best lift ticket deal I can find is the Snow Sampler ( $ 225 for four tickets, anyday of the season) but this offer ends on 12/14.

If you go in April and you want dirt cheap Stay n Ski, Alpine Motel in LP was ridonkulously cheap. And it has a steezy 1950's coffee service in the room. I think we skied/stayed 3 days for ~140/pp room and lift tix.

Just cause you cant time it right when they are open don't go haten on them, You wanna make a 1 dollar bet that they are open the second weekend, March 09? third weekend is a pretty safe bet as well

not hating....but implying the the slides will be open in March and come on up and ski them is misleading....there are years they didn't open at all....how many days last year were they open?

I think I heard 14.

When they are open they're the best slack country in the NE. Here's a short vid from April 2007. I don't know these guys, but I was there that day. It was a Friday and we skied them all weekend under blue skys, then tailgate parities in the parking lot. I does not get any better in the East IMO.
