Date(s) Skied: Sunday 3/27/11

Resort or Ski Area: Wildcat, NH

Conditions: PP, Sunny, 10s, Windy as hell

Trip Report:

Got there a little before 10 to a sandstorm in the parking lot. Got $20 tix in the lot from some guy who had extras... saved me $15 on the twofer I had. Bought hand warmers and toe warmers for the first time in about 3 years... for skiing on March 27th. Started off with a run down Lynx. Amazing PP, not a single slick spot at that point even with the early morning wind. Did a couple runs down this in the afternoon and there were a few slick spots due to the day's traffic and added wind, but still amazing how well it held up.

Next up was Wildcat which had a few slick spots about halfway down Upper, but the rest was also great. Absolutely loved the cruisers at this place. They were in great shape snow wise, they are VERY long, and it was the first time in a while when I actually wanted to spend most of the day skiing cruisers.

Also hit the Quad line top to bottom... some very interesting spots, iced over rocks and crusty snow made for interesting steeps. Bottom had hard bumps with a few troughs filled with soft snow from the wind. Tough run, great liftline. Another good one was Hairball which had a "warning: cliff" sign at the top. I thought how bad could it be, but it really did have a cliff with only one icy chute around it. Good challenging stuff... can't imagine how sick those runs are on powder days. Hit some on and off map woods as well... the one thing the mountain lacks is good tree runs. The stuff I skied more or less resembled chutes rather than glades.

Overall, had a great day up there. Incredible views of Washington (and the snow blowing right off the summit lol). Definitely would return sometime. It's a really big mountain vert wise... cruisers are endless and the ungroomed stuff is very challenging. Anyways, Burke for me Tuesday and Thursday, then I'm on spring break. Will make an appearance at Wachusett for closing day... hope they saved some bumps for me. After that I'm down to 3 days or so. Unreal considering the conditions and temperatures over the past week.

Sounds like it was cold up north today!

The only bumps left at Wachusett today was the short run on Hitchcock. If it warms up maybe they will let Smith bump up again. A patroller told me they don't like to groom Smith if it turns to mush.

Sounds real nice...return to mid-winter conditions?

I wanted to be able to sample the ungroomed but I went after a thaw/freeze which made them tough for my skill level. Groomed trails were real nice though.

Not so cold as it was windy. The winds came in VT about noontime Sunday. It was placid all day Saturday.

Nice report Zand. Excellent to hear that Wildcat still has such great coverage. Looking forward to April turns there.

I'd have to disagree about the tree lines though. It sounds more like 'you didn't find them' as opposed to 'they don't have them'. Wildcat has some of the best birch glade skiing in the east. Sometimes I have Steamboat deja vu when I'm in there.

The winds were definitely howling. Late in the afternoon, I took Wildcat to Wild Kitten, and when I came around that last corner, before the race team building, I was stopped dead in my tracks. And I was carrying a bit of speed, too, since it's a decent way back to the quad.

Bumps were firm, but edgeable. There was some great snow on Catapult, Wildcat and most of Lynx. Very few real slick/icy spots. The one trail I wish I discovered earlier in the day was Wildcat Pitch. Great snow on that one and I'd be surprised if anyone was skiing it. For whatever reason, it gets hardly any traffic. And there are some tree runs on both sides of it.

I'll be there... IDK if I'm gonna pond skim though. Did it once... not really my cup of tea. Fun to watch though.
