Yawn.... and corporate America is still locked into Win XP Pro SP3 with no sign of changing.

I figure most companies are about as likely to take Linux as they are Win 7.

I still can't believe high tech companies are so far behind then it comes to the OS their desktop & laptop fleet use.

It costs a shit-ton of money to upgrade and train everyone. We just got Office 2007 this year. And my company does technology research.

My company has bulk licensing with Microsoft. Each quarter, we have to report in a "true-up" number of how many machines have various software (Office, Project, Visio...) and the total number of workstation licenses vs. server licenses. There's no additional fees with for using XP over 2000 or Vista over XP. Same goes true for Office 2003 vs 2007.

But isn't there an initial cost to get the new software/OS?

Depends on your licensing agreement. The massive corporations have full-on licenses directly with Microsoft.

The problem for the company I work for is backwards compatibility. We use so much in-house code that making sure everything works when switching OSs, and being both forwards and backwards compatible during the switch, is a nightmare.

Some info you guys might find interesting:

“What percentage of your firm's PCs run the following operating systems?”

Windows 7 - 1%
Windows Vista - 9%
Windows XP - 79%
Windows 2000 - 6%
Windows "other" - 1%
Mac OS X - 3%
Linux - 2%

We're not allowed to use anything over XP where I work. I'm not sure on the exact reasoning, but it supposedly is mandated by corporate IT.

Now, what's the easiest way to get a free .edu email address. :-D

Not necessarily free, but you could take the approach I'm using: Date a college girl and use her email address :) (She's an artsy mac-type and won't use it anyway).

Does that mean anytime you mention computers she is compelled to tell you how superior macs are?

Thankfully, not at all.

(I got enough of that with my previous girlfriend and her father)

Ordered my copy of Win 7 Pro last night.

Hmmm, I might actually have to take up UCONN Dental school on the free .edu e-mail account they've offered me for the last 8 years I've taught there for this one ;) First I'll wait and see what the upgrade will cost the general public. (I'm guessing that my wife might get a bit of a "sympathy deal" from microsoft, since her lappy is one of the few that runs Vista ;) )

I might use my @hartford.edu email for the first time since I got it 2 and a half years ago.

So I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 tonight. So far, I like the visual enhancements. I can't figure out what happened to the Quick Launch toolbar. MS Paint got a serious make-over and the Sniping Tool is pretty cool. More to come...
