Dates Hiked: 9/2/06

Trails Hiked: Up Sugarbush North (the access road) and down to the App Gap via the Long Trail

Total Distance: 8 total, 5.5 on the LT, maybe 2.5 up Mt. Ellen (vert 2600ft)

Conditions: Mostly Cloudy, breaks of sun. Stronger than normal winds due to the impending storm

Trip Report:

A real nice hike. The thoughts of clouds and rain kept the goofers away. It was nice to be up there and hardly see a soul. Made good time up SB, a little less than an hour. We were walking around the summit of Mt. Ellen and found a data logger at the top, hooked up to a car battery. It was hardly hidden well. It however was not on. Does anyone know who runs this program?

Started down the LT for a 5.5 mile decent to the app gap via the ridge. Excellent hike, with some fun winds to play around in. Had lunch at the starks nest. Read a funny quote in the log, "If I had a starks nest, it would be just like this one."

Data logger: might be for the ski area????

And it took you less than an hour ascending Ellen via the ski trails???? Wow! Though much of it is an easy walk...the bottom is flat, than you can take Northstar up to Glen House and then the Rim Run is an easy walk up. Nice views?

The data logger was on the true summit of Mt. Ellen, to the south of where the top lift comes in. It was connected to a cell phone, and it was wind related, but we did not see an annemometer set up. The system was not powered up.

We ascended via straight shot, to main stream, to cruiser, up looking good then to rim run...

Yeah, that might be for the ski area to log/record live wind data...or it could be for the GMC or UVM.

The true summit is tree covered, okay it was tree covered in 1995, if you wanted wind for the ski area I'd think you'd have the equipment on the top of the uppermost lift tower. (a good place for lunch during hiking season.)

Yeah, I've been to the true summit...it may be that they wanted measurements for the real summit without interference of the ski area.
