Another good one you might consider is from the ADK Loj take VanHo trail to Wright, then Algonquin, from there a ridge hike to Iroquois.

You bag 3 high peaks in one hike all of which have summits in the artic alpine zone. Great hike with beautiful views.

Planning on going up this weekend. How difficult is this hike?

It's not bad at all. It's only about 3 miles to the top of Algonquin. Granted, you gain about 3,000 vertical, so it's pretty steep, but it's over quick.

As ajl50 did, you could consider decscending between Iroquis and Algonquin down to Lake Colden and then Avalanche Pass and back to Marcy Dam, but that makes the trip a bit more strenuous/time-consuming then just climbing back over Algonquin and down.

OK, so for now the choices are:

In the choice above, I would go back the same way I came. Or:

Any comments, choice 2 is looking good since I don't like retracing my route and prefer going in a circle. ComeBackMudPuddles and AJ, thanks for the suggestion.

You might know about this, especially if you have a guidebook, but be sure to check out the plaque near Wright Peak's summit commemorating the bomber that slammed into it in the 1960s. The military was doing some low altitude training in the fog and the poor souls JUST missed clearing the summit. A bit of the twisted wreckage was intentionally left on the peak.

Nope, no guide books, the maps are all GPS software, thanks for that fact! We'll look for it.

Thanks to all for the great suggestions in the end I wound up doing Algonquin to Avalanch pass, report can be found here: http://forums.alpinezone.com/17785-algonquin-peak-ny-09-17-007-a.html#post186616

Cobble Mt. Lodge - I've neer stayed there myself, but I have friends that stay there on a regular basis year after year. Nothing fancy, but clean. Prices change with event weeks and seasons, but I'm pretty sure it's $59 a night weekends in the winter.

highpeaksdrifter, we did the Cobble Mountain Lodge, great recommendation! We got a cottage for $55 a night. Nice clean and newly refinished.

I'm prcing places for Jan or possibly Feb of '08. I came across the Woodlake Inn. It seems like it's centrally located and looks really cool (rustic). It also seems like a great value as well where a standard room will run about $75 per night (cheap for Lake Placid I guess). Their website isn't too detailed and there aren't many reviews out there. Most people seem to skip over it for the more popular places like the Golden Arrow, Hilton etc. Are there any negatives to this place because right now I'm leaning towards staying here.

I've never been in it. If you put this post on SKIADK you might catch someone who knows about it.
