I don't get what the big deal is.....this isn't even the first time the Pats have been caught doing this...it was in a Packers game. Belichick has the support of his players, the owner(a new contract till 2013) and the fans. He couldn't care less what anyone else thinks or says.

Why do you think coaches on the sidelines of most games in the past few years cover their mouths with their clipboard when they are talking. Everyone does it. Granted this time it was pretty blatant, they got caught and they were punished.

As far as the Jets "doing the deducting" I guess we shall see about that. Should make for a great game.

Check out the utube vid below, I think it's the vid that got leak out from the NFL. Goodell must be p1ssed off about this. I think the commentator got it right, Belichick was trying to study tendencies for future use. However, notice there are three coaches, could be two are giving fakes and one is the right read. If anyone can figure out tendencies it would be Belichick, I think he did it to force the jets to mix up signals and forced Mangini's defense to do more work, change up the tendency which adds more time to come up with a signaling plan. It puts more pressure on the middle linebacker and safety to make sure they are on the same page with the coaches. Especially tuff on young players... yet another thing to remember when trying to learn a complicated defense.

I think the multiple coaches are there to give signals to different parts of the defense - backfield, line etc. Could be wrong

Usually the middle or strong side lb reads the call for the front seven, the most experienced safety reads for the secondary. If the lb is experience enuf, he reads it for the whole defense.

Anyway, during the game you have coaches on the opposing teams looking at your signals in real time. You start telegraphing the calls, the opposing team will pick it up, thats why multiple coaches are used or fake signals are employed. It's not a rule violation to look at the coaches making the hand signals.

Giving that coaches use decoys or fake signaling, why did Belichick do this and what was to be gain from it? The only thing I can figure out is he's looking for tendencies, to do this effectively, he needs to study it on tape.

Agreed. The MIKE is usually the "Quarterback" of the Defense. The violation is blatant because it expressly states that NO VIDEO media is allowed. So, yes, in real time a coach can try to intercept/interpret calls and signals, but he absolutely is not allowed to record them.

Gee, maybe I should quit my day job... go to games, sit in the stand and video cam the coaches signals and sell them to the highest bidder.

On defense, you have to make sure the radio can withstand the impact of tackles and you have to figure out who will be mike up giving the multiple substitutions. In offense, its a no brainer, QBs are heavily protected (by the rules) and he is always involved in every offensive snap.

Also, the offensive plays were already called in. I think your assumption is correct. Tom Brady had a great statement today when he said that it never had any bearing on anything. It's been blown way out of proportion;.

No can do, also against NFL (TV Networks) rules. Just a different rule. Can't videotape from the stands either. This rule hasn't been mentioned because it wasn't technically the one that was broken.

hey, I'm just bustin on the rule, no matter what the rule, some one's trying to figure out a way around it. The competitive nature just makes this happen.

BTW, P King has a great article about the code among coaches, Mangini broke a lot of them, which is heating up this rivalry. Here's the link,

IMO, Billick is calling out Mangini for the illegal snap count as retaliation:

The Sopranos analogy does seem to fit.
