This is just efficient and not really invasive. It's your license plate after all. If I have to register my car so does the next guy. And if some jacka$$ steals my car, I hope he gets caught. I think you share a lot more about yourself everytime you use your credit card.
I have no need to fear with the government looking at me, I am a law abiding citizen(almost) but have always had a fear in the government having too much power and control (1984, Brave New World, Kafka, etc..) However, your statement does put things in the right perspective with this.

While I don't really disagree with you, you hit two scary attitudes- the "If you ahven't done anything wrong you have nothing to worry about" and the "It's not as bad as some other things we already have" attitudes. I know, I know, "slippery slope" is a bad debate device, but still, I don't like it.
