off of I91 in Massachusetts, around exit 25 or 26 there is a what looks like a small ski area that is visable from the highway-east of the highway if you are going north.

in I90 in Central NY, around exit 28 or 29 there seems to be what looks like trails and a chairlift. it seems like it is on the south side of I90 if you are heading west. never seems to be running although the trails look maintained.

Mt. Tom is in Holyoke. Exit 17. Can't see the trails from the highway. Tek is asking about Eaglebrook School in Deerfield.

My mistake. I thought I remembered seeing lit trails from I-91 to the east of Holyoke. I'm not familiar with the specific exit numbers.

Yup, just found it, no idea how I missed that before. :???:

Its possible they were visible before, used to ski there back in the 80's. Never really paid attention then. Haven't noticed them recently, but Mt. Tom has been closed for awhile. Damn shame, was a fun area close to home...

All the lifts have been removed from Mt. Tom and it's not visable really from the highway. The area near Greenfield is Eaglebrook (private school as noted above). That's what rich parents can buy you!

thanks for the replies. that place in deerfield sure looked like it had good coverage.

on the way home on I30, I passed signs for the closed Maple Valley Ski Area. did a quick search and the asking price has dropped to 1.7 mil! according to the website, 1000 foot vertical and night skiing lights.

how about some sort of MRG type of cooperative ownership?

I think I saw somewhere that the biggest problem with MV (aside from likely needing a complete overhaul) is that they have no good source of H2O for snowmaking.

i actually did a silly amount of research on doing a few things with the place. they give you some nonsense about how they have 200gpm from the river grandfathered in. yet no one else town or state is aware of it. when all was done and said it was going to be to much of an initial investment and absolutly no ROI. not that i was looking for a huge return.

Is this the one visible from the Mohawk Trail, once you hit the Greenfield area?

That said, the river that they may or may not have rights to water from is pretty darn substantial, far greater waterflow than say the Black River offers, which Okemo the Southern Vermont Powerhouse of snowmaking draws its water from to fill its wells.

Maple Valley indeed does lack the physical assets in terms of verticle and terrain to ever make much money, but water would be easy to come by with the right environmental lawyer.

Seeing that the West River is across Rt 30 from MV and all the snowmaking equipment has to be removed and replaced plus there is Act 250, just the water issue would be a huge expense and take at least a couple of years.

I'm certainly not arguing that the permitting process wouldn't be expensive, it would be. But, the comment was made that there wasn't a significant source of water at MV for snowmaking, which isn't the case. It's there as a physical resource that most Vermont ski areas would be envious of. That river carries three times the water or more than almost any river associated with a snowmaking operation at a ski area in Vermont. And though it's across the street, it's literally across the street, not one or two miles through the woods, then under a state highway, such as is the case at Okemo

The water is there and plenty of it, there's just not enough mountain next to it for an investor to justify the expense to tap into it. Even with a ass kicking snowmaking system, the place isn't going to draw crowds with the lack of a population center nearby to make it a feeder hill. It would still be a destination for most and simply too small to compete against its nearby neighbors.

good option for a private club like ski hill ala Bear Creak though, if real estate permits could be attained.

I'm almost positive Magic and Timber Ridge were connected at one point in time.

Yup, back in the late 80's and if memory recalls correctly into the early 90's they were connected. I remember the liftline trail on the "timberside" as they called it in its connected form being a fun high speed cruiser with lots of ridges to provide some terrain.

A place with 1000' vert, and lights, for 1.7 mil?

Let me get my checkbook!

That really does seem cheap. Maybe the pumps don't work 'cause the vandals took the handles?
