I just brought a new camera, can't wait to try it out:

I have the previous model (the S3). Fun, fun camera. I now find it nearly impossible to use a camera that does not have a 12x optical zoom.

The thread would more aptly be named impossible new New England ski areas, but what mountains that are currently undeveloped as ski areas have you looked and thought - damn, I wish there were some lifts and trails on that puppy.

I doubt we'll ever see a 'new' ski area in New England. The demand just simply isn't there but....

I've always looked at Mt Equinox and Mt Belvedere in Vermont as two mountains that could support great new ski areas.

you?

Why, Mount Washington, of course. :-D

Yes, it could never happen, but at least they'd have more vert then anyone else around. :-D

Nice. There was plenty today on Lafayette, though the sleet blasting at my face up on the ridge wasn't too pleasant. Also, the wind chill, which was most likely below zero, wasn't too nice especially since I forgot my jacket at home. Still a good time none the less. Someone go buy me a USB cord and I'll have plenty of picture to post.

Damn, kinda wish I went with you.

Andy! Pics!?

Damn, kinda wish I went with you.

I'll probably be hiking again next Sunday. Sadly it doesn't look like there will be any snow though. Maybe a Cardigan hike or something.

Oh, yeah for the topic at hand.. the rest of the Wildcats would make a fine ski area. Also, Moriah would be quite awesome.

This discussion begins and ends with Mt. Moosilauke. You'd be looking at 2600' of consistent, NE facing vertical in the huge basin from the summit of Mt. Blue down into Kinsmen Notch. You'd have a high base elevation of 1900' and if you were ambitious, could string a lift up to the true summit of Moosilauke for an additional 275' of vertical, with skiing in many directions. With the AT on the hill and many other key stakeholders (Dartmouth, etc...) file this one under "pipe dream".

I'd go with the actual Bolton Mountain in VT. It tops out at just under 3700' in the heart of the snow belt just north of I-89. 2500' vertical to the west and southwest, 2000-2200' vertical to the northwest in to the Ethan Allen Artillery Range, and 1700-2000' of vertical to the northeast into various branches of the Miller Brook drainage depending upon if you go from Mt. Mayo or Bolton Mtn. It would have been epic, and likely is today - watch for those shells though.

I would go for this as well. Dropping into Nebraska Notch would provide rougly 2500+ feet of vert and some really good terrain options.

This would be impressive with 4000 feet of vert. However, speaking of wind, the upper reaches of this would be swept clean of snow. You would almost have to build off the East side of the mtn into the Great Gulf to keep reliable snow away from the wind.

I don't think it would be feasible to try and go above treeline on any of the Presis. Too much wind too often. You'd likely top out at about 4000' on Howker Ridge and ski into the Townline Brook basin. It faces due NE, you'd be protected from much of the wind by the ridge, and you'd get about 2500' vertical.

Also, for the record, heading due E would run your towards Rt. 16 and the Peabody River. Only way to the GG from Madison is due S via Madison Gulf, and even then you're only at the way bottom reaches of it.
