Date(s) Skied: January 25, 2009
Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River
Conditions: PP / Hard Pack
Trip Report: Very good day at Sunday River. Pretty cold but probably the best groomer day I have had there. The conditions on the groomers held up well all day. Had to watch out for the occasional scraped off spots as usual... but overall could not complain. Trees and bump trials were pretty firm but skiable for the most part.
Clicked in about 8:30 and did a bunch of laps off the Barker Quad. There was a big race on T2 and Race Training on Right Stuff so that limited things somewhat. I hit the Last Tango glade early. It actually skied pretty decent. Hard pack with occasional blown-in powder but excellent cover. But I have been spoiled with my recent powder days so I didn't play too much in the woods today.
Met up with a friend of mine from work around 9:45 AM. and we skied groomers from Locke to Aurora. Right Stuff (once training was done), American Express and Northern Lights were exceptional. Vortex & Black Hole skied pretty well for some steeper runs. Quantam Leap down to the Aurora Quad was a mess. Pretty thin and icy. Witch Way from Aurora wasn't very good either. But those were really the only 2 bad trails all day.
Unfortunately the Jordan Chair was having mechanical issues so we were not able to ski over there today.
My Friend split around 3pm so I finished off the day doing some laps on North Peak ripping down Dream maker. Even though it is green trail, it is a blast and always seems to have good cover. Some bumps on the flatter parts of 3D held some snow and were pretty fun as well. Took a ride up solo on the new "Chondola" alone on a 6 pack chair... lots of room! Took my last run down the top part of Lock Line, Crossbow to Tightwire. Narrow bump trails that looks like would be a blast with a lot of fluff, but by this time of day my legs were toast and I just kind of thrashed down the firm moguls. Fun to be had anyway!
Some pics:
Last Tango Glade - Firm but skied pretty well
Northern Lights from Aurora skied very well
Dreammaker off North Peak - still good snow at the end of the day
The new "Chondola". It does cut out a lift ride to the top... not sure if it is worth waiting for a Gondi car.
Last run of the day on Locke Line. This was not as good as this looks. After the ridge pretty icy and rocky.
