Decided to head up to Saddleback late Wednesday night since it looked like they were in store for a good little storm. Driving from Bar Harbor is a good 3.5 hours when the roads are clear so we prepared for at least a good 4-4.5 hour trek through the beef of the storm into the evening. Leaving BH we encountered quite a bit of freezing rain which made for an interesting start but luckily traffic was very light and everything turned to snow by the time we hit Newport, about an hour and a half later.

Met up with our friend in Newport and were happy to see ALL snow!!

The roads really weren't too bad until we hit Rt.4 heading out of Farmington.
Check it out when I switch to my high beams!

Got to our friends house in Rangeley around 11:30pm and were greeted to around 14"-16" of fairly light powder.
Our friends truck, one stroke into clearing off the snow.

Woke up early the next morning and got third chair up. Got first tracks down Golden Smelt, my personal favorite after a good sized storm. My wife usually has a hard time in tracked up powder but being untracked, she was having a blast! I remember hitting a little drop off and tumbling into fluff and seeing my friend, Dave, and wife, Melissa, floating out of sight. I was on cloud nine! Got most of the snow out of my goggles and proceeded to hit pillow after pillow of fluff until I came around the next bend where I saw Melissa down and Dave looking a bit concerned. We managed to get her up and into her skis and over to a groomer where she hobbled back down to the lodge. Got her into First Aid and walked out with a bag of ice. Seems as though she tore some muscle which is a relief since she's already torn her ACL in this same knee but we won't know for sure until we get her in for some x-rays. Figured we'd give it a couple days to see how things progress. In either case she was out for the rest of the day after only half of a run!! Thankfully, she's a trooper and remained in good spirits. She assured us she was fine so Dave and I returned to the goods.

Didn't get too many good shots in during the next couple of hours since we were now trying to make up for lost time but we did manage to get some great snow on Royal Coachmen, Peachy's Peril, Nightmare Glades, Dark Wizard, Red Devil, and Lower Thrombosis.

Funny little video of myself in the Nightmare Glades. I thought the music was fitting.

All in all, it was a good day! The upper headwall was completely blown off which isn't unusual and I was expecting a bit more snow but it was definitely well worth the trip. Hopefully, Melissa's knee is just torn muscle but we will see in the near future I guess. She still can not put weight on it but she said it doesn't feel quite as severe as when she tore her ACL originally. We'll keep our fingers crossed!

Wow, looked like a great day. The trees must be in great shape. To bad about the injury but glad to hear it was well worth the trip. I'm going to get the goods up there this weekend...

Woah! Snow Orgy! What heaven! You def. picked the right place.

Now, did Melissa's injury shorten your trip?

No.....she hung in the lodge for the day. She tried going back out in the afternoon for a couple of runs but was in too much pain and didn't want to further any injuries.

That's too bad. The same thing happened to me but I was at St. Anton in Austria. I had to bag the last 2 days of skiing. I hope you treated her fine - nice meal and some extra pampering to compensate for the guilty feeling of being a powderhound without her.

So, what did you think? Enjoy yourself? Going back? Was it busy? Any surprises?

Yeah...I kept checking in to make sure she was comfy. We have a friend that works at a local ski shop she was hanging with as well, so she was OK.
We definitely enjoyed ourselves. That first run down Golden Smelt was AMAZING! I've ridden deeper/better snow but to enjoy first tracks with both a great friend and my wife is what really made it for me. Saddleback has a corny poster in their lodge that reads "You Don't Remember Great Days, You Remember Great Moments". I'll definitely be remembering those few moments for a while!!
Other than that, it was empty all day. Probably no more than 30-50 cars in the lot. We always enjoy ourselves at Saddleback! I kinda consider it my home mountain since we lived up there for a few years even though we are now 3-4hrs away. I'll be back up there, hopefully, Tuesday or Wednesday depending on how this next storm tracks. If anyone wants a tour give me a shout!!!

Did you get a chance to check out the new trails cut this past summer?

Yep.....been on them a few times now. They need another year of cutting/clearing I think before they get good. The entire headwall on the top peak was completely windblown. But once you got about 100 yards down it was mostly powder with some windblown sections. The bottoms of all those trails were just DEEP powder fields though!! It's definitely low tide conditions on both new trails. LOTS of branches and rocks sticking up at the top so watch out!! Be prepared for a bit of a hike too if you want to hit the new trails from the top. After Tight Line it's all uphill to them so it's either hiking or traversing over to them from midway.

Jerseyrob - you need to tell your friend with the dodge truck that his registration ran out in Nov! It looks like you had an awesome time. The conditions are great right now.

Oh pooh. What's more important, taxes or a powder day? :dunce:

Seems to me November is just about the time the snow started building in Maine. There's no choice!

Thanks guys! I'll let him know. Don't think he uses that truck much anyways. It's been sitting in that same spot for sometime now.
Good eye BTW!
