If you had to ski only one mountain for life, which one would you choose and why?

Current reality - Mount Snow - uber easy for me, very happy with the management there and the direction they're taking the resort in, GREAT kids programs(very important now)

Dream (retired) - get me to Deer Valley - great terrain/lifts/service and the year round opportunities(recreation + cultural) in the Park City area are great and you're 30 min via major highway from the airport in Salt Lake City.

Sugarbush.

1. Variety of terrain.
2. Length of season.
3. Ownership/management.
4. People and vibe.
5. Facilities.
6. Views.
7. Crowds.
8. Snowmaking/grooming/natural snow.

Burke is second, but it has a shorter season.

guess it would have to be Jay, mostly beacuse its 15 miles from home, I stare at it everyday, hike it weekly in the summer, and ski its flanks more often than any other, I like the vibe at other mountains better, but if i was stuck with one that would be it, location, snow, terrain (out of bounds), jay it is

Probably would be Jay for me due to reliability, length of season, woods open more often than any place else, friendly turn earning policy, nearby backcountry options, etc.

Other options might include MRG and Cannon. Both I enjoy better as mountains and for their terrain, but Cannon lacks annual snowfall and MRG lacks dependability and can be too crowded and get skied off too quickly. I might look closely at Stowe as well. But Stowe to me is a great location to ski... I just have nothing invested in the mountain emotionally... so it probably wouldn't even make the short list.

Or perhaps Mount Washington. I don't know if I could completely step away from lift serviced. But on the flip side, I don't know if I would ever want to be a skier and not be able to access that type of terrain and enjoy those types of experiences. My answer might depend on if I enjoy skinning even more with better boots and dynafit bindings ;)

taking reality into consideration, i'd go with Mt. Snow for the simple fact that it is the closest "real" ski area to me. I couldnt say sundown. As much as i do love what they do for us and had a blast on gunbarrel in the spring, temptor does bore me to tears after a few months so that would be hard to deal with for 3 months of the ski season, every ski season.

Without being able to change any other circumstances in my life, I would have to say Sundown, as silly as that might sound, for the convenience factor. Glad I don't actually have to choose.

With my life circumstances right now I have to say the same thing. If I chose somewhere else I'd only get to ski a few times a year probably.

With more money, time, and vacation house I'd probably chose Sugarbush. I like the vibe up there. MRG would be a strong contender, and I could see myself being a Magic hermit too...

Alot of you guys have mentioned your circumstances. Because of mine I choose Whiteface 8 years ago. Everything fell in place nicely for me there.

It's a great place to be year around. I wouldn't switch to anywhere else in the Northeast because of that.

I'm glad this is fictional..If I only skied Blue mountain..I would miss skiing everywhere else and Challenging myself..If I only skied Stowe I would get used to paying $5 a beer and miss skiing with the Blue crue and PASRs..and If I only skied Jackson Hole, I would ski 128 days and be happy and totally forget about the east coast...when locals would talk about Grand Targhee I'd just hear an echo and say Grand Junction Colorado good Huckleberry Jelly I like grape the best and then have a safety meeting...

Jackson Hole wins!!!!

I'm envious of your arrangement; lots of skiing at a great mountain (as I've been told) and it seems like you guys have a good crew up there.

Sugarbush. It's been my "home mountain" for several years and always great terrain and variety to be found at Lincoln Peak, Mt Ellen and Slidebrook. Long season and plenty of natural snowfall. Very dedicated management/ownership that can be found on the mountain daily. Mad River Valley is a wonderful place to be in any season.

PBR''s are the thing at the loaf and the River. No I have no idea why, other than its cheap.

They sell it in large cans as well. Insult to injury. Easy to insult a beer snob though.

No kidding, nasty beer. It seems to be a trendy beer to drink, at least around here (Maine), and I don't for the life of me understand why.

I never drank PBR when I was in college, I never even knew about the beer..except maybe that it was a retro beer. When I lived in Montana..PBR was popular with the skibums..at one of the Bozeman bars, they sold a Happy Meal which was a PBR and a shot of Beam for I think $3something.

I know one guy whose a lawyer who freaking loves PBR..he thinks it's lame that trendy bars don't have it..it must be an aquired taste..which I haven't aquired..:puke:

maybe I'll be a hipster in my next life..

Someday New Jersey is going to drive me out. If I were to stay on the east coast my choice would be a house in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire near Lake Winnipesaukee. Picking an area near there would be tough as I find them all very nice but if I had to make a do or die choice I guess I'd pick Cannon. As my children get older and approach college they could have a very large influence as to where we relocate. I could very easily see my son heading west to the Rockies. My daughter (who is closer to college) seems more interested in staying in the Northeast.(I keep pushing Boston). If my son were to head west then I'd be much more inclined to look for some property close to but not on top of him.

Well, if I had to pick one mountain to ski for the rest of my life and money was no object, I'd pick Whistler/Blackcomb (which technically counts as one now with the Peak to Peak). Great Mountains, Great Town, and you can ski until July/August on the Glacier.

If I had to keep my job, I'd pick Gore (because I know it the best and it's convenient to my house).
