Ditto on Whistler, great terrain, long season into the summer, awesome village, and close to a pretty good city in vancouver.

Basically made that decision 20 years ago - It's The River.....

For us it's the one place that is accessible, without crowds, descent terrain, a nice town, plenty of off season activities, and most importantly affordable real estate, especially 20 years ago.

If money was no object, once I retire, then possibly Jackson Hole or Vail, but I/we love NE so that may never happen. Other contenders would include Bridger, Snowbird, Kirkwood (Love the Tahoe area !) or Whistler. I'd have to throw in a vote for Kicking Horse too - that place is spectacular, but a little bit "out there" !!

Could certainly deal w/ Grand Montagne in Chamonix, Megeve, or Garmisch

Unless a major, non-unionized, commercial aeronautics company relocates significant engineering operations to northern NE or out west, Killington is it for me. Closest option with enough interesting terrain.

money/personal circumstances no object? The Three Valleys in France. absolutely extraordinary, expansive and varied terrain.

more realistic? Whiteface (with Lake Placid, the Adirondacks and Montreal nearby, it's a great fit for me).

reality? city life far from worthwhile mountains.

I would have to vote for... where I've already voted for. ;)

I love it here! Great place to visit, and I still find myself, while driving or riding around here, saying, "I can't believe I live here!"

Kirkwood. Not a thing I dislike about the place. No crowds, relaxed, great terrain, and plenty of it, both in and out of bounds.

I'm glad this is fictional..If I only skied Blue mountain..I would miss skiing everywhere else and Challenging myself..If I only skied Stowe I would get used to paying $5 a beer and miss skiing with the Blue crue and PASRs..and If I only skied Jackson Hole, I would ski 128 days and be happy and totally forget about the east coast...when locals would talk about Grand Targhee I'd just hear an echo and say Grand Junction Colorado good Huckleberry Jelly I like grape the best and then have a safety meeting...

Jackson Hole wins!!!!

Except your in wyoming and have to live in Jackson Hole....

Yeah, I liked Kirkwood, too.

But I'd get bored with the "town" eventually. Whistler has the constant influx of Aussies, Kiwis, and Canucks.

Plus Whistler is bigger and offers a greater variety of terrain.

for the real life situation...its Sunday River. Family in the area, used to live and work up there, and we've got a solid group of ski friends...who over the years have become all around friends and we're all in similar stages of our lives...spawning. So our kids will all grow up skiing together in a town where we've got a bunch of friends and have a quasi local status.
Dream resort...tough call to make, Whistler, Snowbird, and Jackson Hole all compete for #1 in my mind...each one with its pros and cons...but its like choosing between the hot blonde, the hot brunette, or the hot redhead...hard to go wrong either way.

Hmm, this one's kinda tough. If I had to pick only one area with my current living/working arrangement it would be Sugarloaf. Still a 3 hour drive from here but the loaf has a lot of terrain to offer, seasons are long, Boyne will do some great things, snowfields, nice glades on and off the map (I am no expert of the Loaf but I've done a couple off piste), great steeps as well as narrows, the mountain has a lot to offer!

Plus, you're just down the street from The Rack where in the morning you can order a PBR Breakfast which includes steak, bacon, eggs, hash browns and a 16oz PBR can:beer:

Top 4 most skied mountains this year:

Cannon: 3 days
Black Mt: 4 days
MRG: 5 days
Mt. Washington: 19 days

Take a guess what I would choose. Next season I would guess that about 2/3rds of my days will be on Washington.

Mansfield is the only thing think that would make me think twice if I had a Stowe pass. Mt. Washington would still easily win out though.

Totally bumping an old thread, but Im starting to begin the hunt for a house and place to settle down, I find this question intriguing. I currently work in restaurant management here in Jackson, and the steps I have taken in my career allow me to live in a ski town for the rest of my life. Not to shabby in the first place.

I think if the stars all came together in the right order, it would be Stowe. Mansfield doesnt need much explanation, and Stowe's marketing stance and recent development supports my career in fine dining. My girl seems to have her heart set on the North Conway area and Wildcat, which is a much more attainable option. I do like Jackson, east and west.

I think I would be happy in either place, but something about growing up in NH has me wanting to move back home and settle down in Jackson NH, or perhaps Bartlett. Wildcat is a great hill, and Washington and the easts best backcountry skiing is just across the street. I would be sacrificing quality tree skiing and about 100" of snowfall a season, but theres just something that pulls me back to NH.

If money were no object.... heli skiing in AK....

real life situation.... Killington or Sugarloaf... mostly due to established history at those places. As someone said above, the relationships count for a lot.

You have been out west way too long. You've savouring memorys. With some of the best BC skiing up on Teton Pass and a huge summer business Jackson Wy blows away anything NH has to offer. STAY WHERE YOU ARE! DON'T MOVE!

Great thread.

My currrent mountain is Gore for great terrain, generally uncrowded, and 3 hours away. If you live west of the Hudson River it is easier to get to Gore than S VT.

I found the perfect place for me, but the wife is not in on the plan:
Reno metro region.
1. Monster skiing w/monster snow around Lake Tahoe with multiple ski area choices and Mammoth is 165 miles away. Not exactly a 1 mountain plan, but there is a high density in the area.
2. Mellow weather year round (high in the non-humid 90s summer/high in the 40s winter, avg 23" snow, 7" rain). Potential for year round mtb and golf.
3. All weather int airport that has been closed once in the last 25 years.
4. Affordable housing.
5. NV reasonable tax situation.
6. SanFran 4-5 hours away.
All the fun of Cali without having to live in Cali.

You want specifics....?

Once back working...think someplace out West...but at the present time I could as well choose JoMary Mountain(somewhat local, ENE of Moosehead) or Green Mountain(west of Seboomook L.)...cuz they're both my skiable freebies..LOL
