Anyone have any good suggestions or know of any happenings for a Labor Day get-away in ski country?

Some things we'd like to do:
Gondola / lift ride to the summit with a hike down.
Kayak / Canoe / Rafting (beginner or guided)
Concert or Beer / Wine festivals
Shopping for Mrs Root

If you were bikers and wanted to get away from it all, a weekend at Burke would be best. The Kingdom Trails are A-1.

Otherwise, look at staying at Sugarbush (close to Burlington). They have a lot of stuff to do--lift rides, etc.

Stowe is an option, but it is quite expensive.

I would just go to Burlington. Easy access for mountain activities during the day, plenty of things to do at night.

And to elaborate:

Stowe has the Gondola ride or you can drive up the auto road and hike along the whole ridge

Umiak does kayak rentals out of Stowe on the Waterbury reservoir

Plenty of shopping and live music venues in Burlington

If you're looking to save time, Jet Blue flights from JFK to Burlington used to be very reasonable.

Only recommendation I'd have if you do go is to bring dark sunglasses. Burlington is often referred to as 'girlington'. Dark sunglasses when in the presence of your significant other will help mask the almost guaranteed wandering eye syndrome.

Thanks guys...I've been doing some surfing around and the Mount Snow Brewers Festival is that weekend, we're thinking about making a go of that, but we'd also like to really do some kayaking/canoing as well, so I'm looking for a place that rents the equipment as well as provides shuttle service back.

DHS - I've been in FL for 10 days....I got the wandering eye syndrome routine down to a science!!! 8)

BTV is a great option. But if you are flying in, you will need to rent a car to get to the mountains/etc. Public transport in BTV is decent.
