They Say They Love Skiing

I was just reading in an old Ski mag this guy was talking about getting ready for his family ski vacation. He says of his wife, “She tells everyone that she loves skiing and she does, except for getting cold, being outdoors and the sliding around on skis.”

That got me thinking that I know people like that. This one lady at work with talks to me about skiing all the time. When there is snow in the forecast she acts all excited about it. When she sees me in the hall or somewhere she’ll say something like “Oh boy, the skiing will be great this weekend. She’s always asking me questions about WF and equipment. If anyone asks her she will always reply that she loves skiing and it’s here favorite sport.

She’s gone once in the past 3 years.

Know anyone like that?

Nothing wrong with that. At least when she makes small talk, she connects it to something that you enjoy. Better than just bitching about the traffic or weather like most people do.

I didn't mean to imply that there was anything wrong with it, she's a very nice person.

My wife... She is a huge fan of spring skiing. But once spring is here I am tied up with coaching. :x

Sure..my Aunt is like that..she likes going on ski trips to Aspen but she really only skis an hour or so before she gets cold and tired..then she drinks hot chocolate, shops and hits the hot-tub. There are some serious fairweather skiers on www.paskiandride.com who love to ski but hardly ever go because there always seems to be bad weather in the forecast or unless family commitments. Those are the people who don't even ski until January because they are so busy with the holidays..I think it would suck to be that busy during ski season.

Skiing is a romantic sport..you are in the mountains and being a skier carrys with it somewhat of an elite status so there are alot of posers out there who say they ski just to pick up women or seem cool but all the equipment, travel, cold weather and being in poor physical shape are a major reason these people just don't really ski all that much. One dude at the bar talks about how this is gonna be the year he gets back into skiing every year. He refuses to go night skiing because it's to cold(this is PA..it's usually 40 degrees in January) and doesn't like the shadows..he refuses to ski on the weekends due to crowds or having to wake up early to beat the crowds and he doesn't use vacation days to ski cause those are for going to the beach and working on his skin cancer..lol

I often think that my expressed love for the sport isn't necessarily backed up with the number of days I get out. I've averaged about 18 days a season the past 5 years, which to me doesn't seem like a lot for someone who is a 'diehard'.

Life is about priorities, one might love to do an activity but it does not have a high enough priority when comes to the other demands one might have on their time .. There have been times I have to give preference to family over going to the mountain even work for that matter.

Is it okay to talk about skiing a lot if you ski 20 days a year? How about 10? What about 5, all in one vacation? What if it's a heli ski vacation to Bella Coola, BC?

It's okay to talk up something that you don't really do. I talk about gambling a lot, but I don't really do it that often. I like doing it, I just can't really afford it. I like Golf, but I only really play once a week in my league. Otherwise, it'd be too expensive. Or, do you have to make financial and life-altering sacrifices to be considered a true lover of a sport? I definitely do that for skiing every winter, but would probably not do it for any other activity.

No, I think it's okay to consider yourself a skier, even if you only get out once or twice a year (or even once every 2 years). If you're skiing, you're a skier, and you're entitled to talk about it as much as you want.

I totally agree.

While I LOVE skiing, I will likely become like that woman in the OP this season. With school 4 nights a week, kids, and running the house, I just won't have the time. Doesn't mean I'm not a "skier" or that I don't truly love the sport--sometimes you have to prioritize other things first.

Exactly! I'd bet that there's some folks who live in warm weather climates who because of geography + $$ only get to ski a couple of days a year that "love" the sport more than some that live in a colder climate and get to ski a couple of weeks a year.
