Skiing is a romantic sport..you are in the mountains and being a skier carrys with it somewhat of an elite status so there are alot of posers out there who say they ski just to pick up women or seem cool but all the equipment, travel, cold weather and being in poor physical shape are a major reason these people just don't really ski all that much. One dude at the bar talks about how this is gonna be the year he gets back into skiing every year. He refuses to go night skiing because it's to cold(this is PA..it's usually 40 degrees in January) and doesn't like the shadows..he refuses to ski on the weekends due to crowds or having to wake up early to beat the crowds and he doesn't use vacation days to ski cause those are for going to the beach and working on his skin cancer..lol

So "I ski the mighty Blue Mountain after work every day" is a great pickup line at the bar? I'll have to try that one.

We have a "I Love Skiing" person in our close group of friends who really loves the idea of skiing not skiing. It's all good she goes a few times a year with us sticks to her comfort level, calls it quits early because it is "getting skied off". She definitly hits Apres' harder than the slopes but she has fun and in her mind she is a diehard skier....and she has the gear to prove it;)

At least we can all stay out longer knowing that she will have a table/spot saved for us for Apres'.

I think it is just a case of her living vicariously thru you. Happened all the time to me, when I used to work. In their minds they are still skiers, although they might not have gotten out hardly at all, lately. They're skiers at heart, and at some time might be able to get back out. Enjoy their enthusiasm. ;)

Many centuries ago I worked with a very overweight colleague who talked up a huge storm about his skiing and racing escapades. It used to aggravate me so the way he exaggerated his claims by leaving out key facts. He'd talk about how he skied Tucks chutes and headwall, skied the deeps out west and ate bark at MRG. Curiously, he would never come along with us when invited.

As luck would happen, we ended up at the same resort one weekend. This fellow was the biggest skidder I've ever seen. Due to his size, he could move more snow than a DPW truck. Could he get down the knarly? Indeed, but if filmed it would have been left on the edit room floor. He was one of the absolute worst skiers in terms of form and technique I've ever seen. Muscle and weight and a lot of yard sales got him down the hill.

Having said all that, I don't begrudge him. He was having fun, and that's what it's all about, and he always came home laughing with stories too big to be believed. After that, I just shut up and let him talk. Why ruin his self-esteem? He enjoyed himself and loved to tell stories. His stories even made me look good. Anybody who's enthusiastic about a fringe sport like skiing and boarding can't be all that bad! :)

the industry needs all the fair weather and infrequent skiers we can drum up...so encourage those colleagues to be sure and get out there this winter...and pay full pop for a ticket...and go buy some new skis at retail!

I guess it is the difference between fan and fanatic. There are people who are "fan's" of skiing and people who are fanatical about the sport. We are the lunatic fringe.

someone key up our theme music! Okay, here it is:

Nice find!

I agree with Phil about where this group is on the lunatic fringe, which is something wonderful to embrace, but I also think that its fine for folks who don't take it as seriously as we do to call themselves skiers.
Its all good if it keeps the sport I love moving along, eh!

yup, I'd love it if another 10 million americans called themselves skiers and hit the slopes for a weekend or two this and every winter!
All it takes is a little bit of conversation to figure out if someone is a "skier" or a SKIER

please, everyone make it your mission to get just one of your "skier" friends out on the hill this year. Would be even better if we could get a stimulous program going to encourage folks to adopt a healthy winter activity and BUY some new skis...something catchy like "cash for clunkers"..."greenbacks for straightboards"..."cash-in and shape up"

screw the industry..as long as Blue mountain, Stowe and Jackson hole stay in business I'm happy..the gapers are funny to watch and all but I'd rather share the hill with extreme type skiers and riders..lol

Skiing, snowboarding, obesity all grew in 2008

SKIING, SNOWBOARDING, OBESITY ALL GREW IN 2008
...Cross-country participation fell by 5.2 percent...
...Overall, Americans report that they are more active than many experts think. NSGA reported that among Americans age seven and older, 78.7 percent (212.7 million Americans) participated more than once in at least one of the 23 sports and recreational activities included in its Series I report, which includes team sports, fitness activities, outdoor recreation activities (except shooting sports and boating activities) and traditional individual sports.
Among the 56.9 million who "did not participate" in 2008, 60 percent were female, 40 percent male....
...Household income has a small impact on participation

...Age is another matter. Fifty-five- to 64-year-olds represented the highest percentage of non-participants, 17 percent, although they make up just 12 percent of the U.S. population. Forty-five- to 54-year-olds comprised 15 percent of the non-participants, while accounting for 16 percent of the overall population.
The youngest Americans, not surprisingly, had the highest participation rates. Children age 7 to 11 represented just 4.5 percent of non-participants; teenagers 12 to 17 years old, 7 percent....

...Despite all this exercise, NSGA notes that the proportion of U.S. adults who are obese increased to 26.1 percent in 2008, compared to 25.6 percent in 2007. The data come from the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which collects health information from adults ages 18 and over.

In six states—Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia—more than 30 percent of adults are obese. Thirty-two states had an obesity rate of 25 percent or more. Only one state, Colorado, had a rate below 20 percent, and none of the 50 states or the District of Columbia has achieved the Healthy People 2010 goal of reducing obesity to 15 percent or less of the population.

There's this character over at Snowjournal who's like No. 2 on the whole forum in total post count, but admits to only skiing about 5 days a year. I think he just likes to post.

there's enough skiers as it is..56 million visits a year...

the number of skiers and number of skier visits aren't the same thing. Its not like in your industry where someone only dies once, and eventually, 100% of the population will need services that you offer. Our industry will begin to lose participants to your industry once the baby boomers start keeling over and according to the national ski areas association we'll need to add 5 million new skiers in the next decade and another 5 million the decade after that just to replace the skiers we'll lose...to you. We can get growth 2 ways...have the same # of people go skiing more often, or get more people into the sport, as someone who relies on this industry to pay my mortgage and put food on the table, I not only want more skiers, but I want everyone to ski more often. All you have to do is sit back and watch the population expand. Only ~4% of the population skis or rides, 100% of them will die. Every 13 seconds someone kicks the bucket in this country and every 7 seconds a new, future customer for you is born.

Actually there is a third way. Invite Wimpy to buy more of your $8 burgers.

I'll admit that it annoys me when some doofus brags about their (name the activity) and then you see them in action only to find out that they are a bag of hot air.

I don't think this is necessarily the case about comparing passion to ski days.

dude, he already does. the side of Interstate 80 in scranton, remember???
Forgot about that. So I'm not sure what he's complaining about; if you know where the goods are, you can find the good stuff weeks, months, or even years after a storm.

Thats true but I like the fact that only a small percentage of people ski. It's part of the appeal..
