In trolling through my accumulated ski-stats-a-trivia, I stumbled on these trails open data from 2006. But most of it got washed away a few days later according to MM Stake data... :-x

I skied Jay four times in October that year including skiing in the trees, specifically Valhalla at Jay of all places, and skied Power Line at Jay as well... two trails that normally require three feet of bomber base to open... and they were pretty close to that.

For some perspective though, look at the numbers from December and January. My reports show January 20th as the "best lift serviced powder day of the season to date" which is not a hugely sensational headline by my standards. But all that was followed up by one of the best month long stretches I have ever experienced in February into early March.

What does it all mean? It comes and goes in waves. And as much as four October days of skiing powder is cool, if it means we have warm temps and no new snow in December, color me disinterested in the very early season.

That said, I still want to ski VERY badly right now. :D

Indeed. Which just support my survival-mode skiing life - behave like a firefighter. Always prepped and ready to go. Just as Ullr giveth, Zeus taketh away as well, peppering us with NCP to wash away the memorable week before.

Of course, your geographic position trumps most of us, not only can you handle the logistics more smoothly, you can get to the goods with much less effort. Where is the jealous emoticon??

Your data = EPIC FAIL.

Killington didn't open until thanksgiving day in 2006...with something like 16 trails Sugarloaf was open 2 days before with like 2 trails.

Oh, and I also skied in october that year.

Yes, but not as easily as when I lived in StJ. For example, Boston skiers and riders are only half an hour further away from the Mad River Valley and Stowe than I am. So my advantage in Vermont is only significant with Burke and Jay. And of course, SoVT I am the same distance as Boston and actually have to travel more backroad. NH is of course a different story but aside from backcountry and some powder days at Cannon, I don't ski in NH.

I think the one place to live with the greatest flexibility to cover the entire scope of New England based on powder would be Concord. Not the closest to any one place but it would have the lowest mean time of driving to all New England major resorts compared to any other location. West Leb/WRJ would probably be up there too for best options but that is getting to make ME a HUGE haul.

There does seem to be something awry with the data. First I skied was Mt. Snow 11/25/06, (2) trails, Canyon and Chute. Skied Okemo 11/26/06, (2) trails, skied Killington 12/13 on maybe 8 trails and on 12/22 maybe (20) trails and guns a blazin'.
The Mansfield stake does indicate the slow start, then it snowed like hell February and early March. Everything was almost gone by the end of March (MRG closed for at least a week), then it snowed for two straight weeks in April, then it all melted quick again, then it snowed again!
That may have been the year I skied Wildcat in October after a three foot dump. I beleive Killington was open that weekend in October also. It all melted however.
So this year is setting up to be a repeat. Got unseasonably cold in mid- October, will suck now til' Christmas, then hold on to your hat!

That was 2005....which turned out to be a bad year overall.

Indeed! I'm cool with this weather cycle.. It's supposed to turn in our favor...

Stats are definitely wrong. 90% of those resorts aren't open that early in a good year, nevermind an awful one like '06. Wachusett didn't open till Dec 8th that year.
