More love from Saddleback.

Was up there Sunday and Today. Out for 5+ Hours each day. Sunday was crowded by Saddleback standards. Today, less so even with a race going on. Great thing about this mountain, despite the number of people at the resort, I hardly saw more than 2 people on a trail at a time.

Weather Sunday was cold and wind started pretty late in the day. Visibility was very poor. As posted in other reports, the visibility was no good for skiing groomers and the top of the Kennebago Quad was like skiing by "the force".

I bumped into a student early in the AM Sunday who spent the day skiing with me. (his mom and sister love the greens and dad is learning to snowboard which left him solo) It became a day of many firsts.

First time doing any real "Glade" skiing. After a warm up lap down Green Weaver, we hit the thrombosis glades which were AWESOME. There was a lot of room to maneuver and the snow was fantastic. Not many people had been in there and we saw no one in our time there.

Headed up to the top of the Kennebago Quad to Black Beauty. The top was sketchy, lots of exposed tree/ rock. Once you made it past the first 200 feet, the snow was soft and plenty.

Next lap up, decided to grow some beans and try the Intimidator glades. The snow was functional and the trees were empty. There were a lot of obstacles that had started to appear. Lots of mini-stumps and fallen trees. Ended up making one stupid turn and ate a tree. Moron. The run was slow and sloppy but made it out in good shape. A lot of fun.

Did a few laps down Parmachenee Belle which was bumped up quite a bit. Lots of slow linked turns but man, great trail.

Ended Sunday with a shot down Golden Smelt. The first turn is around a giant boulder (which you CAN go over but...not me) and after that, is a bump-fest of very soft, very fun snow. Probably the best on the mountain Sunday.

Pics from Today

Today was a transformation at Saddleback. Fresh snow made for a great day and the view was such better. Easily the run of the day was Black Beauty, which I lapped 5 times in the A.M. Also did a few laps down Frostbite. The top was scary stuff. Lots of exposed wood and some rock. Again, after about 200', the snow was soft and fun. Wished I had manned up to head over to Casablanca.

Looking up Frostbite:

Nice! You're making me regret coming home a day early! Hope to ski Saddleback with you someday. I need a tour guide.

Seriously, I regret not making a whole weekend out of it. I skied Sunday River with a discount voucher Sunday and it was fun but not nearly as nice as Saddleback was. Did you guys use your Boyne pass to get the $35 Saddleback tix?

Love the Saddleback Love! We stayed home this weekend. Boy #1 had mid-terms to study for and needed to get some things done around the house. This life thing gets in the way of skiing sometimes.

Next weekend is a Sugarloaf weekend for us. Boy #2's school alpine team is having an informal "race camp weekend" and we were invited by a teammates parents to stay at their place on-mountain. Will be fun as Sugarloaf is another great mountain but I am already looking forward to our next Saddleback trip! Thanks for keeping me stoked!

I did use my Boyne pass. I am glad I remembered it. $35 per day is def. one of the best values in skiing. Especially for such great terrain.

Sal, I will be at the Loaf this weekend as well. Let me know if you want to meet up for a run or two!

Right now its fucking awful (by colorado standards)....BUT the pattern is looking to change this week and the potential for some big snow is finally coming so it could be great real fast. Eldora is fun after an upslope storm, other than that it's meh. A-Basin is still really rocky but with some snow and Pali open is great.....awesome really. Loveland is my go to mountain, we need snow but as far as a day trip from denver its easily my favorite. You could suck up the 21/2 hr drive and do Monarch-they have got better base and it's a stupid fun little mountain, especially after some snow. A fill up at shell will get you a 2fer midweek there. Tix are less than 60 i beleive so you do the math.

Local beer is great. O'dells, Fat Tire, Great Divide, Tommyknocker, so many more. If you really want a great local (and I mean local!) go into golden and ask one of the shopkeepers or townies where Golden City Brewers is. They make really sweet homebrew and you pretty much hang out on the back porch of a house in a residential hood and drink until 7pm or so when zoning says they must close. I usually just walk to one of the saloons though. I don't eat breakfast out often but you must eat Mexican here, it is gooood.

Off to ski some hardpack.....

They have done quite a bit over the past year or two to make skiing there more enticing.

1) The Casablanca Glades - Enough said

2) Installation of the Kennebago Quad

3) The $49 Maine Student pass for kids on Honor roll. As of December they had sold over 800 of these. This is HUGE for getting kids there as it means there is at least one parent buying a ticket that day as well.

Tons of positive vibe which is great. Just wish they would do something about Dazzler. (which is not so much of a trail as it is a traverse from hell)

Last wknd they had a groomer out to about Supervisor or so which helped with the early part of the traverse
I've also read on the Sugarloaftoday forum that they hope to get the cat out all the way to help pack it down a bit
