Attorney General Martha Coakley Encourages Consumers to Redeem Ski Market Gift Cards by January 24

BOSTON – Ski Market Ltd., (Ski Market) will honor 50 percent of the face value of any unused gift cards under an agreement negotiated by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley’s Office, and the Offices of Attorney Generals for Connecticut and Rhode Island. The company initially refused to redeem any gift cards after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 29, 2009. Under the agreement, which must still be approved by the bankruptcy court, consumers holding Ski Market gift cards can use them for up to 50 percent of the card’s face value at any Ski Market store, for the period from Saturday, January 16, 2010, through Sunday, January 24, 2010. The Attorney General’s Office cautions consumers that they must use the gift cards during a single visit and that because the store has filed for bankruptcy, merchandise cannot be returned. Ski Market’s Massachusetts stores are located in Boston, Wellesley, Woburn, Framingham, and Pembroke.
The Attorney General’s Office advises consumers that used a credit card to purchase gift cards to contact their credit card company to inquire whether any unredeemed portion may be credited to the credit card. If it cannot, consumers may file a Proof of Claim in the bankruptcy court for the unredeemed sum. The validity of a claim and the amount of any dividend will be determined by the Bankruptcy Court.

Went in today with a Merchandise credit I had gotten in April. I had returned an item that had been repacked by them, with the wrong size in the package vs what was marked on the package.

They refused to take the the card.

They could have tried to take care of their customers. The Gift cards are only good for 50% as the court ordered them to. Owners are not "stand up" people.

My advice, don't fall for the % off sales that are coming, they don't deserve the cash flow to cover Management payrool.

Grab the stuff at Building 19 next season. At least Jerry Ellis deserves our support.

Even if you don't want to pursue the card anymore, you should at least pack off what you just wrote to Mass. Atttorney General Martha Coakley, so the owner can get beat up over this. Seems to me Martha has plenty of free time on her hands these days

it's also pretty lame that instead of honoring the gift cards or at least making some sort of effort to save face with their customers, they instead decided to bend over everybody that got a ski market gift certificate for christmas by telling anyone that tried to redeem one that it was the court's decision and their hands are tied. horrible customer service. i hope that if they do restructure and reopen, that the people they screwed over by not honoring gift cards are somehow made whole again

The Ski Market Ltd. has switched gears and is now proposing to honor its unused gift cards after Connecticut’s attorney general blasted its initial decision not to upon its bankruptcy filing. However, there is a catch - the specialty retailer will only honor half a card’s value.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal issued a statement Tuesday announcing the deal, which he called a “partial victory.” The deal is subject to bankruptcy-court approval.

The news comes about one week after Blumenthal urged the bankruptcy court to force Ski Market to honor the approximately $200,000 in unused gift cards that customers held at the time of the retailer’s Dec. 29, 2009, Chapter 11 filing. Blumenthal had accused Ski Market of betraying its customers’ trust and potentially violating a state law banning unfair or deceptive trading practices by selling the gift cards to holiday shoppers when the retailer may have known it would soon file for bankruptcy protection.

Ski Market, which operates five stores in Massachusetts and one each in Connecticut and Rhode Island, had said that it wouldn’t honor gift cards or accept returns or exchanges because “the bankruptcy process does not allow” it to. (It does, but the retailer must first choose to seekcourt permission to do so.)
