Conditions: Packed Powder
Trip Report:
It was tough getting up at 6AM to drive 2 hours south from Stowe to Okemo. I had made plans a month ago to meet a couple of friends from Albany at Okemo whom I had never skied with and was excited for that, I was excited to return 'home' to Okemo (I grew up skiing there) having not been in 10 years, but Stowe is the place I want to be after a dump.
Parked at Jackson Gore and was up on the hill by 9. Was thinking the Plunge would have some bumps, but it was mowed flat. This was really the only marginal snow on the mountain I skied, somewhat loose granular. Next run I headed over to check out Sel's Choice. I've skied this trail probably 10 times more than any other trail I've skied in my life. I used to lap it all day as a kid. Bumps were just okay. Backsides were real 'ledgy', so it was hard to let em rip.
I met up with my friends and we did Chief, gorgeous shape and then decided to head up to Glades Peak. The liftlines were really only bad on the Northstar. Everything else was less than 10 minutes, Black and Green Ridge were ski on. We didn't go over to the Southface as we heard it was mobbed due to the lift being down yesterday and people wanting to ski it.
Off the Glades peak I hit Triplesec to Fall Line and then Outrage. Both had SICK pow bumps. Absolutely fantastic and far better than anything I skied at Stowe the day prior. Did a few more cruisers, World Cup, Tomahawk of which the bottom has a pretty cool skiercross course set up. Finished out the day with another run down Sels for nostalgia, then back to Jackson Gore and finished my day with a run down Supernova. This is a long, excellent glade. Would love to catch it untracked. It was completely packed down and is obviously quite popular.
Overall, I am glad I was at Okemo today. Conditions were much superior to Stowe the day prior. I did not see any evidence of rain at all. This mountain gets bashed quite a bit on message boards. No, it's not MRG, but you can have a lot of fun there. Growing up, I felt it was the best managed ski area in the Northeast. Walking away today, I still feel that way. The Muellers get more out of their mountain than any other operator in the east.
