My car has failed me for the last time so I decided it is time to bite the bullet and move on.
Anyone have any experiance with 2006-2008 4Runners? Any pros/cons? Any specific problems to look for?
I am considering a used one with between 20-40k on it. I want to keep it under $23k, am I just potentially buying someone else's problem at that price point? I really don't want to buy new and have a monster car payment.

Thanks in advance for any input on the 4Runners.

See if they had a problem with the sun roof and the rear hatch. Both went bad on me. the back hatch twice.

I had the V-8 got decent MPG. Good truck just got rid of it.

Be4 you pull the trigger on used go look at new. Toyota is giving cars/trucks away right now, seriously.

The 2010 4Runner looks huge, like it's moving into Sequoia territory. A deal on an 09 would be pretty sweet.

WOW, is it really that big??? Guess I haven't seen/noticed them being that much bigger. I'm sure new 09's are long gone, but you never know.

I'm exaggerating a bit, but I've seen one in person and it looked much bigger than the last version.

I have a 2002 with 210,000. Only things I've had to replace so far were the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors. That of course doesn't count tires, spark plugs, oil and such.

Not sure about the 2006-2008s but I'll definitely buy another if this one ever goes. I'm thinking 300,000 is looking feasable.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Keep it coming.

The 2010's look nice, and yes they are bigger, they also have a bigger price tag (approaching 40K for a nicely appointed one).

I have never heard any bad press on these vehicles, my bro in law loves his and I have "tested" that out quite a bit.

Set up some apointments to drive a few on Saturday, Toyota will CPO some of them for 7 yrs or 100k.

I was talking about leasing----there are deals out there if a lease works for you.

If you can swing it....it'll be a lot of enjoyment, but there are a number of vehicles that are enjoyable($.01)....that's possibly the best way to buy used..imho. Take it to a shop...look at drivetrain, ball joints, suspension, differentials, transmission, engine/headers("manifold" by Nissan), yes...cat(s), but they're usually pretty good....*essentially to see that it wasn't beaten to death off-road by someone who simply owns to abuse, then run.. Good chance you're in the clear, but good to get any suspicions out of the way...
Find the 4Runner websites....usually lots of mechanics & [their]info, along with many owners...online that really helps.

Agree big time. I would be more concerned about what the previous owner did with it. Looking for scrapes and dents on the the underside as the first harbinger of suspicion.

If you can find one that was used only to commute to work, and a few tailgate parties, soccer games thrown in, that would be my bet.

I'd like to hijack this thread and open it up to even older 4Runners too -- current wheels are '96 Pathfinder, but looking to get a newer SUV under $10k, and 01 or 02 4Runners are on the top of my list... anyone have any experience with them?

So what mid-size truck-based SUVs are available now? Have they all become huge?

I'll be checking into something with decent tow capacity in a few years...and I have no interest in getting a pick up truck.

i have an '05 v6 sr5 i bought used with 24k on it - no problems yet at 89k. has 3rd row jump seats which were key when the kids were small and it was our family trip vehicle. the '10's are bulkier looking but not really significantly bigger i don't think - i parked next to one the other day. i was just happy they left the body style alone for so many years - really like the looks of that stretch... i think i read the '10's are only availble v6, wtf? now jthat the kids can drive i'll probably start looking for a used taco king cab next year

great advise, but I'll add this.......95% of peeps who buy SUV's never even see a dirt road let alone a logging road or a mud pit, Also, peeps that spend that much cash on a truck aren't gonna beat the snot out of it. If it's a CPO vehicle save the added 50 bucks for beer

I'd check for towing use. Not that towing is a problem since they're usually engineered to tow. But if it's been towed with, I'd take a closer look at the transmission; especially the fluid.

Thanks for all the input. Going tomorrow to look at about a half dozen all basically the same vehicle some with a few extra bells and whistles. 2 have 31k the rest are all low 40k. Let the negotiuation fun begin.

Someone asked earlier about other truck based SUVs, the only one besides the 4runner I can think of is the Nissan Extera.
