I like to take advantage of 2-1 days and offers. The guy that I ski with just dumped $2000 into his car and isn't into paying for trips this season. My question is... Has anybody here ever shown up at a resort with a two for one voucher or on a two for one day without a 2nd skier and solicited someone at the base or parking area to take advantage of a 2 for 1? Did you have any luck?
I have Jay and Smuggs two for ones and would like to hit Cannon someday on there two for one days but am sans 2nd skier. I might have to try this since most of the deals are mid week and I can't readily recruit someone in my area to go.

Do it all the time. In the case of a voucher, people tend to be pretty happy you are saving them some cash.

While not 2 for 1, the local hill (Bristol) has a "family night" deal where three ski for $72 and each additional is $25. For $25 when no one wants to go, several times I have found myself wandering the lift ticket line or parking lot asking "can I be in your family?". The only time I have an issue is when the answer is "sorry I (we) have season passes." So being that this isn't saving the others any cash yet is no expense, I can't see why someone would say no to saving money when you ask about going in on a 2 fer 1.

Yup, done it a bunch of times. Did it last year at a large resort in VT, bought the tickets first and then found someone to pay cash for the other, since I was going to ski regardless if I could find someone to take the other ticket. But have had good luck in the past finding people to be my second skier for a 2for1.

Forgot to mention, one thing I always make sure of is that I bring cash with me when I'm going solo on a twofer. Sometimes the person you try and pair up with will be planning on paying with plastic. This avoids them having to find an ATM.

Just don't try it at Waterville. They actually had the local (!) village law changed to ban that!

I once mistaken a twofer coupon as a free day coupon (it's the ONLY two-for-one in a book of 45 TRUE free day coupons! duh!) When I tried to ask others to join me, I was sternly warned they would call the cops!!!

Weird. It's just the opposite at Cannon. The people at the counter often help connect singles with each other to get the 2-fer.

When did this become law? I remember going last year and there was clearly someone trying to sell her tickets pretty close to the ticket window I might add.

Strange law. That would be like outlawing people at the supermarket check out from letting someone else checking out to use your store reward discount card. Book em Dano and lock em up. Probably a felony charge and you will loose your right to vote.

Not really, it's quite different.

When you're doing the 2 for 1 trick at point of sale, you're taking money out of the ski resorts pocket. I'm not saying that if I ran a resort I'd go so far as make it a "law" (I certainly wouldnt), but I'd put up a sign by the ticket booth saying that "sales on property are prohibited". This is common place in any ticket-related business (professional sports teams, concerts, etc..), so I'm surprised to hear people are saying it's not enforced more at ski resorts.

It really is not selling anything. I can see if you are trying to sell a ticket (scalp) but this is not that. Could I hand out a coupon for 50% off to someone for free?

This is why I find ski buses to be the best deal for going solo once you consider wear and tear as well as gasoline on a car.

For example Sunday River is $67 (first 25 seats) or $77 (afterward) on MLK Day.

Even if I were to do say a 2 for 1 on their $80 rack rate, that is $40 per person. But coming from Northeastern MA, I still have to cover gas, etc. It's 180 miles each way, or 360 round trip from my house vs 50 miles round trip to the pickup. So I'm saving 310 miles, or approximately 13 gallons worth of gas, which would cost $43 these days (and that's not even including wear and tear and tolls which of course is a chunk of change in ME; $9.00 if I'm right nowadays for the round trip which includes the York, Hampton, and Southbound ramp toll plazas). Of course, if you want to ski multiple days, this is a different story though especially if you have multiple vouchers to redeem for nearby or the same resort. And of course this is a different story if you don't live in eastern MA. Plus, you get to sleep and watch a movie of some sort on the way back even though you may not be able to take it all in because I usually end up sleeping 1/2 of the way.

Not really.

If I know I can't hook up with someone at the window with my twofer coupon, I'd go somewhere else. (this assumes twofers are typically offered for weekdays, where I can almost guarantee to get deep discounts in another mountain)

So, they're either going to get the full price ticket of the "other guy", or they'll get the same full price for 2 tickets for the two of us. They're not getting to sell 2 full price tickets.

Now, if they count the lunch sale, they'll be ahead with both of us skiing. But if both of us brownbags it, they simply have more body on the hill that day.

Usually not a factor because most times I ski with the DW, but unless there's a clear sign stating that it was prohibited I'd try to resell the extra ticket.

yup

and I definitely tend to spend more in the bar / food court when I'm skiing at a discounted rate. I don't believe Waterville's strategy is better for their bottom line. It just encourages people to take their business elsewhere.

I can see if you are trying to sell a ticket (scalp) but this is not that.

Well, lots of people basically do just that.

Lets say the ticket is $60. They sell the "free" ticket for $40 to someone else that was just about to pay the mountain another $60, thereby bringing their cost for skiing on the day down to $20, and blocking the $60 sale the mountain was about to effect.

And for the people saying they wouldnt ski there if they didnt let them do this. Really? I find this a bit difficult to believe, and think it far more likely you'd just return another day with the BOGO.

Lets put it this way. If everyone started "selling off" the BOGO match at point of sale, you'd see a helluva lot of mountains either stop issuing BOGOs, or more likely, severely cutting back on them.

Two for one is a sweet deal always

I'm cheap, so BOGO is my favorite of ski deals. It's why I gas up exclusively at SkiRideFree gas stations during winter whenever I'm near one!

Must be nice to be a state employee. At a for-profit business, you'd get fired for doing that.

I didnt know Cannon was state owned, and I was pretty shocked when I read his comment about employees helping people to get free lift tickets. NOW it all begins to make sense.

Huh? You'd get fired for offering the deal that your company is offering? I was at a convenience store earlier today buying a drink. The sales clerk told me that those drinks were actually 2-for-1 so I should grab another bottle. I hope the she didn't get fired for saying that.
