Could someone please explain moguls to me?

Bumps are somtimes the only challange on the mountain. And for me,they require total commitment. As soon as you get tired, you have to stop. You can't just noodle around in bumps, you have to charge or you get tossed. That's why I love em.It's also why I usually only have so many mogul runs in a day.It really whips you.

I love the bumps but it's hard to describe why. Maybe the challenge. Maybe the little powder pockets. Maybe the flowy feeling. Just love em.

oh yeah I snowboard....

Just went back and read UVSHTSTRM's post. My wife also kills it on the bumps on a board. I've also always attributed to her better patience and focus on form.

I definitely enjoy shredding the bumps on a snowboard, especially in the spring. Claire's Way this past Sunday with those sweet soft moguls was pretty awesome.

I like the feeling when you can get in a rhythm as Cannonball said

I had a rought time at Wachusett tonight. I would start on a good line but there was a point mid mountain where it would just get away from me. Wrecked on my last run of the night (no yard sale tho) when my skis got away from me and I barrelled it over the top of the moguls trying to keep upright. Lots o' hollering from the lift

Yeah,I was there too today. The bumps are always awkwardly placed there, usually in rows instead of an alternating pattern. There was one good line down the middle however, but as you said it was kind of weird halfway down.

Reading through posts someone mentioned flow, I think that's the nail on the head. When you get a rhythm going and conditions are right (no snowboarders), moguls become the mountain's harmonic resonator for oneness.

For me much of the joy of skiing comes from the feeling of weightlessness. On teles, at least the way I ski, each bump offers an instant of that thrill. I don't care about zipperlines and can't ski them. Irregular bumps and trees provide an opportunity for exuberant self expression.

Ok, I'll try: it's all about the difference between boarding and skiing!

No, I'm not trying to bash boarders or even making fun of boarding. But on skis, it can actually FUN to ski bumps, as long as you choose the appropriate size for one's skill. When I rocket down some small bumps, I feel like I'm dancing with the music! The rhythm!

Well, you probably ask "but most of the skiers I see on bump fields are awkward and definitely NOT dancing!" That is true. I only get those ZEN moment at maybe 5% of my bump runs. But I keep working on them so the next one will be better than the one before, till I get a good one.

So yes, technical challenge for skiers. With a huge reward when we get them right once in a while! It's no difference than hiking for 1/2 hr in search of powder, only to find frozen crust under a dust of snow. One might ask, what's the appeal of hiking?

YEAH! That's another BIG ski/board difference!

On a board with only 1 short edge instead of 2 long ones, steeps are much harder. Very few boarders are really good enough to manage steeps. Put in some bumps, you got natural speed break, aka, stairs on a rock face!

On skis, it's not hard to carve/slip down a steep trail for anyone who can parallel ski. So comparatively, steep bumps are harder than just steep.

Both of these answers are pretty much what I was thinking in the beginning. Just wanted to see if anyone agreed. Especially the part about the steeps. Like some of the other boarders in here, I don't mind moguls. I don't exactly seek them out, but I can ride them pretty well. I use them to teach my snowboarder friends how to ride the glades without the risk of hitting a tree.

Good answers in here. I'm actually very impressed that it didn't turn into a snowboarder vs. skier flame war.

Edit: I guess I missed the few of you that just HAD to make snide snowboarder comments. I'll ignore them in the interest of keeping the peace. That and I'm in too good of a mood to be bothered right now. 2 days till my Breck trip!!

Yeah, that was me who mentioned flow. And I mentioned it as a snowboarder who enjoys bumps.....

There are more snowboarders in this thread stating that they enjoy and/or ride moguls than actual snowboarders I've ever witnessed on mogul trails.
