Anyone done this? There's info online but usually it's regarding larger TVs with substantial weight so it gets kind of involved.

This TV with the bracket is less that 25 lbs. I used this bracket in my last place that had wooden studs. It has 2 mounting holes, one over the other, so it's meant to mount onto a single stud.

I'm wondering if 2 self-tapping sheet metal screws will be sufficient. I would have tried it this afternoon but I can't find my dang tape measure right now so since I have time to kill I though I'd see if anyone has done this.

sidenote: the other day I was at Lowes and I asked a couple of old dudes working in the hardware department how I should do this. When I mentioned the hollow metal studs they looked at me like I was from Mars or I must be making this shit up. They had no idea, which was disconcerting.

unfortunately, anytime a metal stud has to hold more than drywall, they usually frame something with wood inside the wall. like a door jamb has metal studs, with 2x4s in side them. id be nervous about self tappers. what id do is find the two studs and find centers. drill a 1/4 hole in each, than use the smallest shortest toggle bolt you can get. probably like a 3/16 x 3 inch.

im trying to post a pic

Yep, that hardware was plan B. I was avoiding it because the hole you have to drill to get the "butterfly" piece through is big but it seems like it can't fail. Now it's plan A because...

after I posted I found the tape measure and drilled the first hole. Then I ran the self tapping screw through. No support; spins totally free. I had to drill the hole anyway and I wanted to see what happens. It's wild how thin the stud material is.

cut out a square of sheet rock, mount a block between two steel studs, fasten block to studs, put sheet rock back. mud patch and you are all set. residential steel stud flanges are pretty weak.doesn't take much to bend them.

Just buy a bracket from Monoprice

http://www.monoprice.com

I contacted monoprice tech support to get a best practise answer for mounting on metal studs. the answer I got was they were not allowed to give a best practice for metal studs. they sell brackets for wood, cement and brick. some helpful tech support , not. I would still cut out sheet rock and install wood blocking betwen two studs or three studs depending on size of TV.

Fill the wall cavity with concrete, and mount to that, it's the only way.

Finally got the bracket hung. Used toggle bolts as discussed above. Just 2 on the same stud. I'd be shocked if it didn't hold somehow.

I had to take a couple of days off the project to go skiing.
