Thin cover, do you ski/ride it?

I view my skis as tools to get me where I need to go. I've never been into the newest, most expensive or different types of skis. I either want to be in the woods or on bumps. Ride them, abuse them, get new ones. Thin cover, next to no cover, go for it. Love finding $350 pairs of Volkls on EBAY. In two seasons 2 blown out edges and 5 core shots. Skiing.to me is all about the thin cover and venturing to find those untouched stashes for runs that you remember all summer.

Hell yea I ski it. Each mountain can vary in what they consider thin cover. What MRG/Magic/Wildcat consider thin cover is completely different then other places. I know that I will come across grass, exposed rocks, and water bars and I need to be prepared. What really pisses me off is when mountains don't mark thin cover early/late season when there is light snow on top of exposed base (i.e. Power Line at Jay). That is usually when I end up damaging my skis.

^This. The most difficult conditions are when there is a couple of inches hiding the coral. I rarely take core shots, mostly just scratches by staying light on my feet.

I never really thought about it. If it is open then it is fair game. As someone mentioned earlier - Thin Cover means fewer people. Depending on what I see will dictate how i ski it. We cycle through skis every 3-4 years so I do not treat them all that nice. Spring is notorious for thin spots so it is hard to avoid around that time of year. The glades develop spots depending on the coverage. Some times you just gotta do it!

The core shot is associated with the broken edge, I assumed the skis were toast and skied them accordingly. I should have got out my phone and Googled "broken ski edge", and I could've avoided the core shot. They're back in the shop now, they are reattaching the edge. That edge will forever more be an outside edge. Ironically, the skis were just repaired due to damage from the previous Friday. It was the best day of the season for me at my local hill. They had gotten 6" of fresh the night before, and I enjoyed skiing many sketchy lines that day. I could've stayed on the groomers, but the day wouldn't have been nearly as memorable. You win some, you lose some. I'm doing my part to keep my local shop in business.

I love to ski "thin cover" trails because it usually means they are natural. I try to avoid rocks as best I can, but I don't lose any sleep if I hit one. My skis have already lost their virginity!

Yes, but cautiously.

When I see a sign like that, I'll try to see what's underneath the cover. If it's just grass, I charge ahead. If there're a few isolated rocks, I go around them. If there're just a lot of rocks or formation that's hard to get through without potentially big scratches, I bypass it.

I do like to try to ski everything available, but when I go up the lift line at the river, (2 I still haven't done), I look at the coverage. I can do the trail, but I really don't want to ride my skis over the rock. If it's unavoidable, I just wait until there is more snow, and I get rain dissolving it away....... Phooey. But of there is decent coverage, I'm gonna do it. I may not look pretty doing it, but I'll be loving it!

Depends. Really. If its not too cut up I'll try it. But if I know there's a lot of rocks and no base - forget it.

I like bumps and fresh...in New England, that means sticks and stones. It's end of January and still crappy out there...and still grass showing...I love thin cover, means a groomer didn't ruin it:lol:. My last skis were $75, which I used to replace the exact same pair I got for $200 (reused bindings)..those finally have shot edges that can't be sharpened anymore, so I'm back to my pre-rock, rock skis (before those 2 pairs, one is actually bent, but still performs fine, lol) which were cheapo used that we bought for my teen who didn't like them, so I took them over...all are used SL race skis. Back to looking again...haven't found anything under $300 so I'm still looking...that's too pricy for me. I ski...the equipment is secondary, any ole pair of used SLs in 155ish range will work for me...(PM if you have a pair...any brand will do since they're all built to the same FIS specs). Gosh..I could never imagine giving up some trail b/c I'm afraid of damage...I am damage
