Where: Hunter Mountain
Conditions: Powder, packed powder and awesome!
Weather: Perfect Bluebird, 20s and no wind.
If you like powder and bumps today was the day to be at Hunter. Yes, some of the mountain had been groomed but there was a lot for fans of natural powder to still enjoy.
West side double blacks were all bumped up, especially Clairs. 44 was open and was powder and bumps. Colonels Alt and Way Out had some bumps here and there and was getting a big skied off when I was there around 1 pm.
Racers Edge was completely ungroomed, powder and bumps top to bottom. One guy said "It's a bit rough".
I got there about 10 am and took a few warm up runs on Kennedy and through the terrain park. Very nice, lots of powder, packed powder. Then went to the top and ran White Cloud to the Belt. Again..sweet! Then took The Cliff. Top part was getting bumped up, lower was groomed with packed powder.
Hellgate was powder and a bit bumpy on one said and got skied off rather quickly. I spent some time running upper K-27, Minya, Lower Crossover and the Milky Way. F-Lift was open so it was easy to go up and down. Nice powder and some bumps. Lower K-27 was bumped up and someone told me it was skied off and icy. Not being a huge fan of bumps I passed and stayed on the other trails. They had lots of powder, a few bumps to make it fun and the legs got a good work out.
Took a lunch break around 1pm and after checking out Way Out I took Jimmie Huega, which was absolutely beautiful. I also did Drop Off once to check it out. Lots of powder and some bumps to make things interesting. Other parts of the mountain were getting skied off at this point so it was a pleasure to stay on Jimmie for the last hour of the day. I would then take Bleeker and go on Eisenhower. Eisenhower is one of my favorites. Perfect packed powder and a blast to cruise down to the lift on.
The day was perfect. Around 20-25 degrees. No wind and bluebird skies. I was surprised at how it wasn't at all crowded! I only waited on the line to get on the lift a few times before noon. From noon onward it was ski down and onto the lift. A few times I sat on the lift myself.
By the end of the day a lot of the more popular trails were getting skied off and chopped up. I am staying overnight and am wondering how much they will groom for tomorrow and how much bigger the crowds will be. I'm thinking the weekend will be crowded but tomorrow is it for me. I plan to make the most of it and be there when the lift starts turning!
I thought last week incredible, especially since it was pretty much manmade. What a difference a week and a foot of natural snow makes! It was a whole different mountain! I love packed powder and groomers but I really enjoyed today a lot. I love the fact that I can enjoy a variety of conditions and it was a really nice change. We don't get enough days like this!
