Trip Report:
First time skiing in the Mt. Washington Valley area. The distance always kept me
away from this area for seemingly smaller offer for the distance I had to drive.
I was pleasantly surprise and got a few times more than I expected.
We stayed at Grand Summit at Bear Peak and first I took triple up with my daughter
(6) and traversed to Attitash while my son and wife explored Bear Peak. It was
first time out for her this season and she was skiing primarily green and some
easy blue last season. She got a little nervous at the end of Tilt which was
narrow and steep. You really cannot go back and forth among the two mountains
without hitting small section of relatively steep blue on either directions.
We took double up and came down Inside Out. I was quite surprised how steep
it was for green, and regretted that I couldn't ease her into the new season with
my familiar terrains. But the snow was very nice and soft, and she started to
be less tense after a couple runs and visibly started enjoying herself.
We spent all the at Attitash with other two joined later, and by the end of the
day, my daughter even took Cathedral down off quad, which has pretty steep
pitch at the top which she negotiated slowly but surely. My son said Idiot's option
was awesome. Since my wife thought Bear peak was too steep for our daughter,
we took shuttle back to the hotel instead of skiing back.
Saturday morning was warm and soft. I checked out Wandering Skis and got
convinced that my daughter can manage it give the soft snow although there are
three pretty steep pitches. I came down Illusion with my son and it was wonderful!
None stop top to bottom with nobody else on the slope.
We joined girls who were getting bored with trails off triple and took the quad all the
way up, feeling comfortable that daughter can handle it. We came down left side of
the mountain. down Morning Start, Snow Dancer, Cub's cut, Kachina and Bearfoot.
Then we did Wandering Skis. My daughter carefully came down the first section
and didn't have any problem, but interestingly, my son managed to fall off the trail, go
through small branches and got stuck in powder and I had to go down to help him up.
He is advanced skier and this never happened to him before so it was so unlike him.
He thought it was funny but we had to remind him it could be much worse depending
on what he could have hit. It started to rain past noon, and eventually part of the
mountain got very foggy and my daughter started feeling uncomfortable so we
wrapped it up early.
It rained through the night and Monday morning came with visibly less snow on the
ground. At this point, I assumed (turned out to be wrong) that mountain is totally
icy all over and given its steepness, not much for my daughter to ski on. So we
decided to take a trip up to Bretton Woods which is only 20 minutes away.
Given the same bad condition, I preferred gentler terrain of Bretton Woods I'm familiar
with. But interestingly, as we get closer to BW, snow on the ground was much much
less than that around Attitash area. As we skied there, it was FG at the best as
I expected but it was negotiable for my daughter, although she complained a little.
It was not as great as the days before but it was as good as I expected and
we had good time.
I was tempted to go back there Tuesday, but my son leaned toward skiing
Attitash again. So, assuming it is icy, I sent off girls on shuttle to Attitash
while checking out condition of Bear Peak with my son. It turned out to be
in great condition, much much better than BW! Sure it was a little bit more
FG mixed at the top but hardly any icy spot I could find. Ungroomed snow
was definitely frozen but can't ask for everything. Feeling more comfortable,
we joined others at Attitash and had a wonderful day of skiing for the whole
day. I was particularly impressed with Upper Ptarmigan which was very soft
and comfortable. Kids had great time and Mrs was also enjoying the empty
slope where she can go as fast as she wants. This year, the calendar lined
up perfectly that the last day of school was four days before X'mas day,
giving us 4 days of stress free skiing with $109/night slope side
accommodation.
This was by far the most wonderful skiing X'max vacation we ever had in
New England.
