Tap Into Winter Party & 2006 opening

Just got mail from Belleayre today. Tap Into Winter party is Nov 10, skiing or not. "Free food, ski & snowboard videos, games giveaways. Equipment Demos (weather permitting). Ski waxing demonstration. First 50 people to bring their skis get them waxed for free. Fashion Show."

If I remember correctly, though the planned opening was earlier, Belleayre did not open until November 25th last year, after Thanksgiving, the day of the Rail Jam.

Some posters were wondering what it is like early season there. I wrote about my first ski day there last year at my blog, November 26, 2006,

There are only so many runs one can do from midstation and back to Lift 7 on Onteora. That lap took about 6 minutes, 5 of which were on the chair. But there was snow, or what passed for it. It was more like spring snow, because it was fairly sunny and the temps were up in the low 50's by 11 A.M. I gotta admit, I was having a little fun because there were enough people on the hill to cause some decent jumpable bumps.....

....There were a ton of boarders yesterday. Probably because the night before was "Rail Jam".... They weren't even annoying. More annoying were practicing ski patrolers and groups of instructors-in-training standing around taking up scarce trail space.

I took an early lunch break at 10:30, and ate on the deck. I even dumped my shirt. The rest of the day I skied in just my longsleeve under-layer with my sleeves rolled up and a vest. Had to take my gloves off on the chair rides. It was empty enough to ride the chair alone, so that was pretty boring. Had some meaningless but spirited banter with the lift attendants, at least. Still I was done with Onteora-bottom repeats by 1 P.M. By then, there was a lot more brown snow down by the lift. So I bagged it for the day.
