Sugarloaf Trail Map 1988-1989 season:

Greg should note how the Misery Whip trail does not exist and is the King Pine T-bar line.

Only 70 trails back then

You're the man! :D Great stuff! I honestly wish I could download the Rand McNally 1986 video on NE Skiing for y'all to see...covers Sugarloaf, Stowe, Smugg's, K-Mart, Snow, Saddleback (which was up and coming in the day), and Waterville Valley pre-express quad days! The people, outfits, and lifts are just so interesting to see!

I spent yesterday organizing my collection of maps and brochures. I am helping Teachski with the skiing website. I have trail maps from:

Jay Peak 1987-1988
Killington 1987-1988
Hunter 1987-1988
Okemo 1989-1990
Pico 1989-1990
Wachusett 1990
Nashoba 1990
Sugarbush 1990-1991

I also have a ski New England map/guide from 1985.

I will share this with the group and with Teachski as I have time to scan all this stuff.

Interesting that the "Whip" still had the poma on it then. Anyone know when it was removed and Misery Whip was officially opened?

I never rode the full length of the gondola, as it was not working when I visited in 1989  O took many rides on the shorter version right up until it closed in April of 1997.

I inquired about the King Pine T-bar at the Sugarloaf chat site, hopefully I will get a response.

I will scan the Sugarbush 1990-91 map tonight. Teachski posted the 1987 Jay map that I sent yesterday.

I have ridden the old Sugarloaf gondola from bottom to top and later just the top section. Seeing the old trail map pre inflated trail counts, brings back memories. The t bars were actually the best on cold and windy days, as riding slowly through the trees out of the wind was pleasant.

I skiied sugarloaf from winter of 81-82 to 84-85 and then took a hiatus until the saturday of reggae weekend this spring.

Looking at the trail map, I wasn't aware that the king pine area was cut during the late '80's. I have great memories of taking the t-bar up (out of the wind) and zipping down very steep and narrow chutes with the tops of scrub pines sticking out from under the snow all over the place. My biggest disappointment this year was finding that whole side of the mountain had been widened and in some areas flattened - I think.

As an aside, the worse day of skiing was spent at the sugarloaf - 5 runs on the bottom of the mountain, 5 cases of frost bite (I was turned around at the lift) - clear and super cold with a wicked wind coming across the bigelows - I actually didn't ski the rest of the season!

I sent you a pm about this, but I found some of my older Sugarloaf trail maps and the King Pine T-bar is still on the 1993-1994 map, but it is removed on the 1994-1995 map and Misery Whip is officially designated as a trail.

I'm curious

Where did the mountain pick 200 feet of vertical in the past 15 years?

I'm certainly not suggesting that they heavily fudge their numbers as it clearly has the greatest vertical in the east next to Whiteface, but I did notice the difference in looking at the old map here compared to the advertised 2820 they claim today.
