DOCTOR Jeff D....D...S

Technically I'm Dr Jeff D.M.D. - Let me just end the questions before they start and say that there is NO difference between a DMD and a DDS and it's all about what degree the dental school you attended choose to award. Or as like to joke with some of the students I teach from time to time, DMD = Didn't Make Doctor while DDS = Didn't Do Sh^& :)

BTW, I'll spare you nice folks some of the really good "gross out" dental photos I have on my computer at work ;)

I always wondered about that...now I have the answer ..thanks.

The technical version is the difference in the degrees is nothing more than a pissing match between 2 of the oldest dental school in the country, the University of Maryland and the University of Pennsylvania. Maryland came out with the D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) first, and Penn feeling that their program was superior  decided to award the D.M.D. (Doctor of Medical Dentistry) soon thereafter.

There is actually now some behind the scenes talk of scrapping both the D.M.D and the D.D.S in favor of a unified D.D.M (Doctor of Dental Medicine) for clarity sake since there is no difference in the scope of practice between the D.M.D. and the D.D.S. My take is it will never happen since it would take ALOT of big bellied gray haired folks that make up the majority of dental politics to agree of giving up there degrees in favor of one singular title, not a chance!

Just a quick dental heads up for the New England folk. If you've got a little dental issue right now that you're thinking about picking up the phone and calling your dentist about this week. Do it before Thursday as Thursdat through Saturday there is a HUGE dental convention in Boston that attracts about 30,000 dentists and associated office personel mainly from New England. So there's a decent chance that your regular dentist won't be in the office the end of this week. Conversely, Thursday and Friday night in particular there will be a lot of drunken dental personel roaming the streets and bars of Boston, especially around Copley Plaza

ROAD TRIP!!!!!

You should hear some of the "plans" that the ladies in my office are putting together for later this week! Based on what I'm hearing, if any of them have a BAC under .2 after 6PM on Thursday, I'll be stunned!
