I had an 11 legacy outback wagon as a rental on my CO to MT trip earlier this year. I liked it well enough as a rental comfortable enough putting a ton of miles over 8 days but if I were a buyer I would look for a low mile 08-09, I liked the body style much better, new ones seem like they are moving into crossover suv territory.

I agree that the new Outbacks are going more truck and less car now.

I've owned 2 Outbacks and a Legacy and loved them all. All these cars have/had at least 200,000 miles on them and my old Outback made it to 350,000. The Legacy is going to be replaced by a new Legacy with a 5 speed soon. My wife has an Outback and I'm buying a used Outback for my new driver son.

I like Subarus.

Thanks for the replies. This will be our third Subaru, but 1st Outback. We had a Tribeca that we loved (Was leased). Wife now has a 2010 Acura TL-SHAWD. Also have a 2011 WRX(This car is a hoot! But my son drives it most of the time) The Outback would be replacing my company car as they will no longer be allowing spouses to drive the company cars. (Thanks to a few idiots getting DWI's in their company cars!:-x) Company has an Auto Equity program that will cover the cost of the car minus the down payment. Looking the get the 2.5i Premuim with the CVT for better gas mileage.

I test drove the 6 speed manual before deciding on a premium Forester. I liked it and would have purchased the CVT (great mileage) but it came down to money. The new Forester is all the car I need.

While the new Outbacks are too rich for my blood, I find the new Legacy to be a good deal for a roomy AWD sedan.

I test drove the 6 speed manual before deciding on a premium Forester. I liked it and would have purchased the CVT (great mileage) but it came down to money. The new Forester is all the car I need.

While the new Outbacks are too rich for my blood, I find the new Legacy to be a good deal for a roomy AWD sedan.

I came close to the legacy, but decided I needed the room.

I looked at them before I got my Jetta TDISW. I was coming out of a 09 Forester, my 16th Subie, was one of my least favorite Subes. When I looked at the Outback, two things (err three) turned me off, 1. too plasticy inside, like the 09 Forester. The plastic got hard and not the soft feel my 2x previous 06 Leg SW was. 2. No more large sunroof, since I have been Miataless, I really like a big sunroof. 3. The car was huge, too big for my needs, as many have said SUVish. I really liked the size of my 06(-09) generation of Legacys in fact the Legacy more that the Outback. If they made a (real) wagon version of the Impreza, I might have considered that. All I want is a wagon with 66-70cu/ft of space.

Also if anyone from Subaru reads this, bring over the diesel! You have a fantastic diesel that will be right in the wheelhouse of your customer base. Bring that, and I will be back as a customer ready to buy #17.

I drove the new Forester and hated it! It was tinny sounding and seemed very cheap. The Outback was MUCH better imho. I looked the the VW diesels, but need AWD. Wish they sold some with AWD! And yes, Subaru NEEDS to bring their Diesels here!

Just curious,why the 'need' for AWD? I used to think I 'needed' AWD, but having been in FWD cars with decent snows for the past 4 years, I'm now of the feeling that AWD is rarely necessary. I have had zero problems getting to the mountain or anywhere for work the past four years. I work in sales and put 35K miles per year traveling for work all over New England. I'd especially be open to other options if I already owned two other AWD cars like you do.

My son has the WRX up at College, so that leaves us one. My wife works at a Hospital, and MUST get to work. Sometimes I take her car skiing when she works...so. I even tried to talk my wife into a front wheel drive, but was overruled! The 2011 Outback seems to be a Very good compromise...

Is AWD better in snow country? Of course but it isn't the end all. The proper tires are so much more important than the amount of drive wheels be it winter, summer or racing.
