Trying to figure out what THE story will actually be today?? Tiger obviously and playing pretty well (-2 through 12 as I'm posting this) or Tom Watson, Freddie Couples and Phil Mickelson tied for the lead after their 1st round.

To the TRUE golf fan, I'm thinking it's the later of the 2. If Tiger does something spectactular on 13&15 and finishes at -4/-5 then it's gotta be him without any doubts as THE story IMHO

Agree, well, mostly. If Tiger comes in tied or in the lead, IMO, he's spodda and Idon't care how long he's been away from the game----he's the world's #1 golfer AND really is that good. Tom and Freddie are the real story----Phil's gonna fold like Samsonite.

I think it is kind of early to be deciding what THE story is after only one round. Couples, Watson, and Leftie could easily fall out of contention before the final round, let alone before the weekend is in the books.

And I think it is kind of pretentious to label one story as the "TRUE golf fan" story. Personally, I would love to see Tiger take the whole thing. Far too many true golf fans are riding this guy for his personal failings. Why shouldn't true golf fans be excited to see the best golfer in the world take one step closer to becoming the best golf ever on record and do so without having played a game in half a year.

Tiger is the biggest story of the Masters regardless of what happens between now and Sunday. Right now, I think that is because the media made it the biggest story but I would love to see Tiger give that story some actual substance instead of its media given tabloid drama.

It would be pretty incredible though for Watson or Couples to win. What a year Couples has had so far! As for Lefty, I could care less about that story. Phil winning would be a story of an amazing stop to a bleeding beginning of the year. Phil shouldn't be a story... but it is surprising to see him playing well all of a sudden, that shouldn't be a story though.

100% pulling for Watson. Was so bummed when he didn't win the British last year. Would be an INCREDIBLE story

If Freddie can get a ball to stop on the bank next to Rae's creek infront of 12 like he did when he won in '92, then this tourney is his ;) , and I think that he's got the engine (and attitude) to go 4 rounds with Tiger.

Phil's getting better, and he openly admits that he doesn't need his A game to get around Augusta well (and that's a good thing given how he's been playing this year). I'm guessing that he's got a 73-75 coming either tommorrow or Saturday.

Watson. GREAT story today. Problem is the weather's supposed to be decent the next 3 days, and I just don't think that he has the firepower to stay up near the top of the leaderboard when he very well may need to get to -10 to -12 to even think about a GREEN jacket this year

Tiger. I bet that he's mentally drained tonight. Gonna be interesting to see how he comes out tommorrow AM. If he can shoot 69/70 tommorrow, he's going to be tough, since I'm betting that if he gets through tommorrow in decent shape, his confidence (and comfort level) go way up, and I think we all know what happens then

My semi-wildcard aftre todays round. Anthony Kim. Hits it a mile. Playing well. Not afraid of Tiger. No doubt in my mind that he wins his 1st major, and does it soon (kind of like Andrew Weibrecht in the Olympic Super G where you could just see going into it that it was only a mater of time until that breakthrough happened)

The Masters would be an even more incredible feat than the Open for Watson. While you still have to make shots, the set up favors the long ball hitter

Weekend, shmeekend---the story of the tourney regardless of what day it is is Watson---the dude is 60 yrs old and in contention, PERIOD. Only in golf does age not matter.

Tiger will do well, he wont win, top 3 for sure tho.....Freddie all the way!!!!

Woo! This last nine with the top guys is very entertaining! Tiger looks like he might have made one too many mistakes unless he can put together a run like AK just did! What a putt from Phil on 12!

Congrats to Phil, that was some impressive playing. A great story. I am not one to normally get caught up in that sort of thing. And I think the media over does it quite a bit with the "human side" of sports. But what Phil's family is dealing with sure must put a huge burden on the guy and his family has his back pushing him onward. Pretty stark comparison to how the Masters started with the hype on a golfer with a family in distress and ending with the focus on golfer and his tight family. The AP reported Elin did not show at the Masters and would not have been there for Tiger if he had won. Interesting juxtaposition there...

I couldn't be happier about the outcome than to see Phil win it. :)

Happy as well. I was pulling for Watson or Couples, but I'm never displeased when Phil wins. Obviously a really great thing considering the challenges his family are going through.

Tiger is still my favorite but Phil is my second. Kudos for my namesake.

That was IMHO the best golf-theatre-drama since Tiger won the '08 US Open with his bum knee at Torrey Pines. And yesterday had to have the folks that run Augusta (and CBS) smiling from ear to ear. Perfect weather day, GREAT leaderboard, GREAT golf being played the majority of the day by those on page 1 of the leaderboard. and a mega popular champion with a very emotional win! When the weather is like it is yesterday where scoring can happen, there really isn't a better closing 9 anywhere in the world than Augusta, the combination of the history and the fact that you can go low just makes for some awesome viewing!

Now I'm just wishing I had pulled the trigger on a new Callaway Driver through Golfsmith last week as they ran a promotion where if Phil won, your Callaway driver purchase from late last week is free
