Getting back to the original question re: upgrading to an alarmed lock...

Agreed that locks provide some measure of deterrence, but the fact that a miscreant “really wants” something does not guarantee success. We usually learn of their efforts only after they succeed; their failed attempts often go undetected. However, I know of cases where lock housings were destroyed, probably by a swift kick, but the cable remarkably held. These locks were not passed over, suggesting that the thief did target the specific equipment being protected. The locks still did their job but unfortunately were rendered useless in the attempt. They also were not alarmed. (Moreover, cable cutters are too risky to carry around at a ski area as they are so obviously out of place.) Thus, adding an alarm to the lock may result in the protection not only of the equipment, but also of the lock itself.

@legalskier, a lot of the retractable locks, even though they have a flimsy plastic housing, actual locking parts are made out of metal, so breaking the plastic shell doesn't "unlock" it.

Don't really pay any attention to it, won't whine if it happens. Try to only take my skis off at the car, rarely go into lodge. If I am having a beer at the bar, usually drop skis off at the car 1st. I sometimes am not so bright and leave them in snowbanks when we are dropping cars off elswhere, try not to do that too often. Even Jay has plenty of thieves now, peoplele can suck.

I'm surprised more ski areas don't offer complimentary ski check. Blue mountain has at both of their lodges for the past few years and Sno mountain offers the service as well. Some other areas charge a nominal fee for ski check..

i was at hunter last week and was happy to see they had free ski check, i used it twice. I found it odd though that inside the lodge they had a $5 bag check....

The current threads concerning stolen gear got me to thinking about if anyone has ever had their gear stolen while employing a cable lock? I was wondering if I should up the level of my security with an alarming cable lock...
OK Oldsnowboarder. You started this thread. What did you conclude? What did you decide to do/not do???

That's cool, I didn't know they had either. A little strange that they would charge for one and not the other though.

That there have been no reported theft of equipment while a cable lock was being used. I probably will stay with what I have already .. but when it comes time to replace it a lock with an alarm is probably what I will purchase. I will would upgrade immediately if I ever heard of a cable being cut .. Forget what I just said I will probably order one .. cheap insurance..
I'm not up to date with the latest alarm systems, but I'm guessing that batteries exposed to the outdoor winter wind chill would equal failure ... carry on
