Been having some issues w/ my current car, 06' VW Passat Lux edition. It almost has
50k on it and the warranty will run out and I don't feel like dealing with the headaches non my own dime. I am eyeing the Acura line of cars now. Probably a few year old Acura TL, no older than 06' or more than 40k miles. Anyone have any experience with them, mechanical, comfort, etc...

Thanks,

Geez, 50k and you're looking to ditch it. Thanks for reinforcing my opinion of vw's.

I sure am. Was getting off the highway yesterday, gave it some gas to get out in front of a car, bam, exhaust blows. Got it to friends shop up on lift and the down pipe had blown off at the turbo, had towed to dealer. Last week, problems starting for a few months, got fed up, would have been almost $2k at dealer but had warranty and had to replace steering column, etc.... I really want out of the car before things go worse and I don't have the protection.

Good move to get away from it. VW/Audis are fun to drive but can really take you to the cleaners when other brands wouldn't. I know this board has it's fans but I've seen this time and again. I read about a Jetta Wagon and drool but I don't have faith in their reliability.

I had an '02 Acura TL. Loved the fit and finish of the car. Handled and accelerated like a champ. I miss that car. :-(

I have an 04 TSX with 27k miles that I bought brand new. Other than one stupid recalls(re-route some wire in trunk) I have had no problems. Also did not purchase the extended warranty! Real fun car to drive.

Would highly recommend a Acura/Honda.

I am more a fan of the Infiniti G35x than the Acura, much more of a drivers car.

Thanks,

Would it be cheaper to by the extended warrenty now vs. buying another car? I always buy the extended warranty and it has always paid for itself. Even with my toyota

Do you typically buy them through the dealer or through a third party?

My CPO warranty is about to expire on my A4 (100k mi) and I've been tossing the idea of an extended warranty around in my head for a bit.

I like to do the small / medium jobs myself, but the bigger stuff I'd rather not have to deal with.

Had an 06 TSX. Great car. Only thing I'd knock on it is the mounting of the DVD drive for the nav, in the center roof of the trunk. Pretty much anything of size going in bonked it. I was constantly afraid I'd rip the mounting right out. Never did, though.

Go for the 6-speed, if you can. Lots of fun.

Not all of us transport bulky things like hog-tied/drugged women in the trunk. Probably wasn't something the Honda engineers took into account.

They are always thrid party but if you buy it through the dealer you bought the car from you can be confident they work well with the carrier for any repairs that arise. I buy mine at the time of purchase but I know you can buy them after. I would go the the dealers service department and ask them for advise. Be careful you dont walk out with a new car.

Hookers weren't the problem (they have lots of soft edges). Duffle bag handles would get caught on extraction, though. Shovels were a real nuisance.

at 70K miles, my audi is starting to fleece me. wheel bearing just went, rotors all around when brake service was needed (required) is big$. rotors are not grindable - made thin for "performance" which is lost on my. The Airbag light went on - the electronic control pod is hosed $600, plus 5 hours because you have to dismantle the dash to get to it.
serviceability does not appear to be a watchword over there.
We've run with Toyotas for 15 years now, and all I gotta say, is God bless simple design, with simple parts that are readily serviceable, even when reliability gives out.

I think you'll find the Acura rather boring, but hugely reliable.

Do you do any work yourself?

That's how I stay sane with my Audi...

I did the brakes all the way around (pads and rotors) for under $300... bought stuff from www.ecstuning.com

ModuleMaster.com will rebuild your ABS module for about $300 and they have videos and instructions on their website to show you how to take out the module and put it back in...

There are options out there to save the $$$, and for me, I enjoy driving my Audi much more than any other car I've owned or driven for an extended period of time, and I like doing the work also, so it works out for me.

I've actually found the Audi to be pretty decent to work on as long as you're patient and have the right tools... Moreso than my girlfriend's Ford or my old Pontiac.

Nice idea, but I lost interest a long time ago and now there is no time in my life.
The car is a late model and is uber-complex, actually excessively complex. My next car is going to be a Lada ;)

Sorry, it's an airbag issue, not ABS

To each their own... I agree that the time is the biggest investment on my part... But I don't have kids to take care of or anything, so I can find the time when I want to.

And oops on the airbag module. Don't know why I read ABS.

What year is yours? Is it an A6? I seem to remember that being mentioned somewhere.... I've got an '04 A4

Any car that can carry that much cabbage, and yet cost so little, is good in my book.

Have to add that to the standard questions asked of the sales guy.

How much horsepower?
How often does it need service?
How long is the warranty?
How many dead hookers fit in the trunk?
How many head of cabbage can it carry?

I recently discovered that site. We needed wiper blades for A6...and I'm used to not finding anything at the local parts store. ECS came through on that one. Another place I used to get my VW stuff from was www.germanautoparts.com. Outstanding customer service.

It's so funny when you go from a German auto over to domestic. I wanted a hood guard for my Jeep. I walked into Advance Auto, went over to that section and it was in stock. With a German car, I was used to buying my OEM oil filters in bulk online.
