HIGHMOUNT, New York -- Belleayre Mountain is hosting the Wall St. Adaptive Skiing Awareness Day on January 6, 2007. This special event is to thank all the people from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) who were so generous to provide Belleayre Mountain with six new adaptive skiing sleds. In addition, the event will highlight the beginning of Belleayre's adaptive ski school.
Two not-for-profit foundations through NYSE, Pack for Iraq and Member's Handicapped Children's Fund (MHCF), donated adaptive skiing equipment to Belleayre this fall. Four children's sleds and two adult sleds significantly added to Belleayre's fleet of adaptive equipment available for lessons and rentals.
Belleayre Mountain's snowsports school has been working behind the scenes for the past two years to certify instructors to teach adaptive skiing lessons and to acquire the necessary equipment. Helen Hayes Hospital (HHH) in West Haverstraw, NY, has been a vital component of Belleayre's burgeoning adaptive program. Rehabilitation specialists from HHH became volunteer instructors at Belleayre and attended clinics in teaching adaptive skiing, and they've brought patients from their rehabilitation service at the hospital to teach how to ski.
The NYSE is recognizing the efforts of Belleayre to develop their adaptive skiing program by inviting the Superintendent of Belleayre Mountain, Tony Lanza, to be a part of ringing the bell to open the market on Thursday, December 28th. Lanza will be joined by adaptive skiers and members of Pack for Iraq and MHCF.
The Wall St. Adaptive Awareness Skiing Day at Belleayre will feature a race on the Nastar course, an apres-ski party and plenty of adaptive skiers showing their talents.
