Resort or Ski Area: Mount Sunapee

Conditions: FG/PP/P

Trip Report: We decided to ring in the New Year with some afternoon turns at Sunapee. We were introducing one of our friends, and a new Sunapee passholder as well, to the place and glad I gave her the warning. As was expected, lots of noobies and the typical holiday crowd. Upstairs of lodge was dirty thanks to some kids  Idea: clean up after yourself

Our friend's pass payment was caught in a snaffu, but Sunapee was nice enough to take her picture, get the pass ready to be printed, and gave her a free day ticket while the payment issue was resolved. Great service all season...thanks folks! :D

Onto skiing...we headed to the Spruce Triple for some warmups down...good soft snow on top of a firm base and no real lines to speak of. The second run was down Eggbeater and over to the North Peak Triple. Another friendly reminder: don't take novices down steeper slopes please  Caught a beginner in my headlights as I came over a roll on the trail.

We then skied over to the HSQ via Tobaggan Chute. HSQ crew was doing a great job loading and moving the crowd

First run was down Blast Off for me, which had soft powder bumps on the side. I cut over to Upper Ridge and met MJ and Ms. Trailboss before heading down the trail. This run was a bit skied off and overcrowded...almost got runover once or twice as well. Despite these issues, I managed to find some soft snow on the edges and some nice bumps to roll off of. Next run was the same Ridge Run and it was less crowded. I found the inside of the corners to be the softest.

MJ and I did another long Ridge Run before Ms. Trailboss rejoined us from the lodge. While MJ was warming up inside, Ms. TB and I did a run down Bonanza and Byway/Hansen Chase which had soft snow on the sides and skied off ice in the middle. Crowds were calming down. We also hit Skyway Ledges, which was icy.

All three of us closed on the South Peak area, which had probably the best surface thanks to the least traffic. The terrain is easy, but I did not want Ms. TB, who was tired, or MJ, who was having her first day in a while, get run over or hurt on the ice. Good call IMHO. Nice easy runs. I did the mini-terrain park, which was interesting because it had some bumps on the top for one to play in and some jumps and ramps below :)

At 3:57, they called it a day while I stormed the HSQ for one last run down Skyway Ledges and, Chase Ledges, and Hansen-Chase, sticking to the sides to find some soft snow and bumps.

A nice afternoon...Sunapee did a great job helping people...I just wish some of the clientele would be a bit more considerate...but that's why we ski early and midweek when we can

MJ gave the place two thumbs up...

Ms. Trailboss said "I didn't ski well," but the conditions were rough due to traffic.

I'm curious, do you post as Summitchallenger on Snowjournal? If not, you have a lot in common.

skiguy, care to list a few of your aliases and where else you have posted under those other names?

I also noticed this similarity with the two personas.

Does it really matter?

My folks were there yesterday (Monday, January 2nd). It was a zoo, auxiliary lots, bussing, etc. They took one look and turned around, then headed to Crotched where they had a good day without lift lines.

I was there on Monday, 1/2, and it was truly a zoo. A million people on the Ridge, it seemed. But the skiing was fantastic on the Sunbowl side. Wingdings was great until it got icy in the afternoon.

The staff managed the lift lines pretty well though, and the wait was minimal despite the crazy crowds.
