I last skied Alta on the Monday before Thanksgiving. While conditions were decent up to then, the lack of any snow last week, and company for Thanksgiving, I had decided it wasn't worth going for a few days. My second season out here, and I am getting so spoiled. In any case, I thought I might ski Alta today, but hadn't really decided for sure since I had some chores lined up and had promised to put up the Christmas lights outside the house.

After spending a "retiree morning" lounging and reading news and opinions on the web,(including last night's snow report) I spent the remainder of the morning untangling some strings of Christmas lights. I finally decided they were a lost cause and would go buy new ones. By this time it was nearly noon, and the wife made an "executive decision." She said: "Go skiing and do the lights another time." I finally drove up LCC and first took a slow drive through The Bird. I finally settled on parking at the Wildcat lot (which was nearly half full) and took Collins up. I took my steel cap Volant Power Karves since they are stiffer then my BD's and have been my ski of choice so far this season. In no time at all I realized that coverage was excellent (around 6" new for sure) and the snow was deep and soft enough for the BD's. I took two runs and then decided to change skis. While the trails were fairly soft, I spent my time skiing the trees under the Collins lift and down past the Angle Station. I also traversed out on the T and dropped down on Sunspot and Racecourse. The trees were really nicely covered and deep enough for really enjoyable carving. I also went out into the Ballroom a couple of times and found excellent snow there. I never bothered to go over to Sugarloaf since I was having such a good time and I hate the traverse back when the wind is up. Despite the fact that it was so late in the day, I actually got some lines that hadn't been skied. Alta was that empty! When the light got flat and my early season legs got tired, I went home for a nice Johnny Black and a hot shower. All in all, another nice (half) day at Alta that I will check off as "Day 15" of my season.

Awesome for you man  If I could be so lucky in my retirement.

I went the PREtirement route. Spent my 20's and firsst half od my 30's doing snything I could not to work. Rode my bike 150 days a year...2 and 3 rides a day. Skiied -+100 days for 7 years, learned to Paddle and climb and chased white water all over the state....I figured, when I'm old, I'll be too shot for anything, so I may as well shred while I'm young. I'll prolly die working in the kitch and they can just add me to the stock!
One day before I die, when I'm a really good teleskiier I'll get out west to all these sick places. Teton Pass, LCC, Sierras, interior BC, AK. Until then...
Keep the TRs coming, I'll live vicariously thru you.

West trips & Alta 12/4

While I am only in my second season here in UT and am still learning the terrain, I will gladly hook up with any AZ'ers coming west for some turns and a brew. Just PM me and we can set it up.

BTW, I did Alta again today. Again, I didn't go up until around 1 PM (I had to put up those new Christmas lights that I bought yesterday evening.) When I got there I found another 6" of fresh on top of yesterday's snow, and it snowed hard most of the afternoon. Conditions are definitely building up to something sweet. It was great practice for the real Powder to come!

There is no need to live vicariously. Just get on one of those silver birds and 4 hours later you will be in Salt Lake City. Fortyfive minutes later you can be skiing "The Bird" or Alta. BTW, while it didn't really snow more than a dusting last night, it was a "Bluebird Day" up at Alta today and there was plenty of terrain for every taste and ability. After a couple of runs off the top of Collins down to the Angle Station, I took the "High T" and made several drops into "Race Course," "Sunspot," and "Watson Line." The sun was bright, and the snow was soft, although, I did make the acquaintence of a few rocks. What the hell, that's why they invented P-Tex. The High T did get pretty rocky toward the end, so I didn't bother to take it around to backside and High Rustler. I did drop down to a lower traverse line and managed to ski the lower parts of Stone Crusher and Lone Pine. It was a very mellow day #16 in LCC.
