Take the money you're not using for skiing and buy one of those skier video games :( It stinks, but keep thinking positive and don't do anything to mess up the therapy. There is always spring skiing! Chin up!

I suffer occasionally from 3 herniated disks, L3, 4, &5. I have been doing my exercises daily. I have a deep tissue massage every other Thursday followed by a chiropractic adjustment Friday morning. So far so good. Most healers will advise against surgery. In fact I recommend this book for you, a "must read". "Treat Your Back Without Surgery" by Stephen Hochschuler & Bob Reznik. It's published by Hunter House Publishing.

You can do this. Realize that you are on a journey of more than a few weeks, and there are no quick fixes.

I wish you the best Sheik, and hope to see you back on the slopes soon.

Thanks, I do appreciate the advice, but the dr who administered the injection said it would be better as time progressed (3 - 5 days) noticing gradual decrease in pain and numbness, I am going the opposite way of that. I know that surgery is in my future, I just want it over with and on to rehab. I work in Marlboro, but live in the Dedham area. Hopefully I've worked with a PT clinic in Marlboro and they were really good. I just don't want to fuss around with PT, then shots then more PT only to find out I needed surgery the whole time.

thats exactly what happened to me....I wasted 4 months doing it. I went to PT, didn't work...chiropractor (against my docs wishes) didnt work....shots...didnt work.....SURGERY. Worked for the most part...still in pain and weak. PT is helping I guess. At this point I think I just need to give it TIIIIIIIIIME. which I don't want to.

I guess maybe I am an exception but the shots worked for me. Definately pay atention to the therapist and do the exercises that they recomend religiously. It is a long and sometimes discouraging process but keep your chin up. It will get better.L5 and S1 were my problem areas. Like I said before, after the first shot I had about a 75% improvement, after the second, all pain was gone. After the second shot, then they started me on PT. I don't know what he used in the injection, but he drew fluid from 4 different bottles when he filled the needle. Don't know if it was a secret concoction or what but it worked!

I suppose I should also add that I've been lazy in keeping up with exercises that I should be doing at home....which I'm sure isn't helping anything.

I tried chiropractor for a while at first but I think the constant manipulation actually made it worse. Once I finally got the diagnosis from the cat scan, I went to the specialists at Maine Spine and Rehab and they fixed me right up. I can't say enough good things about their practice. They definately know what they are doing and understand the needs of skiers as well!

Sheik,

I can totally sympathize. I had a herniated disc at L4-L5 many many years ago. I avoided surgery with chiro. ( LONG TERM !!!) The sciatic nerve pain is the worst, nothing touches it. I remember the pain. I remember my husband in tears because he could not stand to see me so helpless and in such agony. I would go to chiro appointments and lie on the floor in the waiting room because I could NOT sit.

The floor was my friend for months. On my back with my knees raised ( that is 'traction" to keep your lumbar area flat. I SLEPT on the floor for about 6 weeks.

Best wishes to you,

Breeze

Thank you so much. I'm doing better, but not near 100%, doc strongly suggested another injection in the spine since there was some relief. Scheduled to go in on the 7th, he said don't worry about the ski season it's long, but I really doubt I'll be hitting the slopes this year.
thank you again for your concern

Sheik,

You will make it back out there. I ended up going earlier this month and really pushed it. I ended up doing something new which was take a break midday (right after lunchtime) for an hour and did a stim and stretched. It worked amazing and I skiied 2 days in a row for the first time in 2.5 years. Keep up with the docs recommendation and hopefully you will be back out there this season!

Good luck and keep your head up

Glad you have some relief. The second shot did it for me. Are you doing pt? they wouldn't let me untill the pain was gone and then went for back strengthening exercises. I still do them every morning and it def helps. The ski season is early yet so you still have time. I missed out on all the great spring skiing last year. I was bumming but determined to get healthy for this season. Do what the drs tell you. Believe it or not they do know what they are doing!
