We had a thread in here about someone's board being lifted, but I wanted to remind people going out this weekend to lock their skis/boards. Last week, VPR had a story about thefts at a number of northern VT and NH resorts. Today someone's skis were taken from the Sunapee lodge--a boy and his father were speaking to the manager as I was leaving. Earlier this season, I witnessed a theft in progress at Sunapee. The manager literally was chasing after the boys and calling the police on his radio. Fortunately in their haste to leave, they tossed the board and jumped into their car.

Thanks for the heads up.

Last Sunday, I had my poles lifted at Sunapee...certainly not as bad as having skis stolen, but annoying nevertheless. :x

What do people do for locks? I have one of those basic ski locks but it's difficult to get through the bindings and the cable's a bit short.

I have a ski key which works with the ski key rack systems that most resorts I've travelled to in Canada have. It allows you to lock both standard skis and poles in the rack provided. I however can't get 2 racing skis into the rack and end up securing just my poles and one ski. Kinda figure no one will steal just one ski. Can't beat it for convienience. 1 tiny little lock in your pocket. Are there ski key racks around new england ?

I was curious so I checked their web site...there are racks at a number of ski areas, but unfortunately none at the places I go to most, including Sunapee. :-?

cable locks are sold at most ski area shops and work quite well. a worth while investment. just do yourself a favor and don't lock your skis up using a ski tote, those things are so 1980s ;)

What?

I have a cable lock but don't use it anymore. They can be cut with a good wire cutter, they're another bulky thing to carry in your pocket, can be lost and often are irritating to fix correctly. I'll use it if I bring two or more pairs to the slopes for myself, but that doesn't happen much anymore. Ski thievery is nothing new (while Board thievery might be), and I'm surprised at this warning. Remember, if you aren't using the latest and most expensive equipment, your risk of seeing it disappear to thieves will be minimal. Almost all stolen equipment fits that catagory. Futhermore if you avoid weekends and crouds, you run a much smaller risk than that. If you spend all your time on the snow instead of goofing off with the lodge bunnies, you have absolutely no risk. As to your poles, you can separate them, but I just throw the strap loops over my ski tips and this is a deterent. Most resort shops make their money on pole sales by the way.

How many of you pay the $2 or so and "check" them at the lodge? Have to admit I've done that once or twice!
