Anybody ever do a guided backcountry day with Alaska Guides at Alta. Thinking of doing it for guaranteed freshies and cutting lift lines. I want to make the most of my trip. I'll be there last week in feb.

Well, I did go on a guided backcountry tour with some very experienced locals. Best day of skiing ever. But you need to be in shape to handle the climbing and the altitude. It damn near floored me. But you will gain access to the deepest untracked snow around (weather, and conditions permitting). I would do it in a second.Just be sure you have the right equipment.

Yeh, altitude is definatly my fear. I felt it my first day a Keystone last year, 2nd day was much improved! The guys I'm going with want to do it on our first day, they had no problem with altitude last year. These guys are both professional trainer's so conditioning is not an issue. I have all necessary gear, just think I need a day or two, then have at it!! Thanks

To be honest- with the snow and wind they have gotten the best skiing is in avy controlled resorts for the next week or so.
So - yea...that's my two cents

I'm sure it's one hell of an experience, but if you want "guaranteed freshies and cutting lift lines", I don't believe it necassary. Plent of good conditions around, and if you want to avoid lift lines, avoid the bigger resorts. I do Solitude of Powder mountain on weekends and never have any fear.

the snowpack has been a little unstable, especially with the winds last night (blew a few trees down near my room) but it will not take 2 weeks to settle. Plus an experienced guide would never take people out into a place that has considerable avalanche danger. With the amount of snow we've been getting this year, a high temperature gradient is not a major issue, so the backcountry has been pretty stable even just 2 days after a storm (obviously stability still depends to a large degree on aspect). Anyways, have a great time out here. DMC, if you are in town and want to grab a beer at Alta's sitzmark after skiing, just come in and ask for Ben from NH. I have to work a lot this weekend through monday but I have a really good skiing schedule after tuesday. I have a bird pass too so maybe we could grab some runs.
