After a crappy end to the workweek last week, my luck seems to have made a complete 180...

I won two tickets to see the Worcester Tornadoes from the place where I get my oil changed in the company pickup (free drawing). I thought "It figures, I need three tickets or I have to give them away." After calling the box office, I was able to get one ticket for the seat directly in front of the other two. Cost: $10 Sweet! 8)

I won $7 on my MegaMillions ticket, which I bought because the jackpot was at $84 million. (No winner, maybe luck-be-a-lady on Friday!) I also won $4 on a scratch ticket, which I bought because I was feeling lucky when I bought the MegaMillions ticket. The lottery winning offset the cost of the extra ticket. Life is good.

Are the planets in alignment or something? I hope it continues... Foxwoods anyone?

The swimming pool in my backyard including the cost of hiring an electrician was thanks to a lucky series of pulls on a $5 slot machine back in 2001 at Mohegan Sun.

That was my only hot streak...

I won $300 playing craps once. At deercamp. In Arkansas. When I was 9.

Haven't won anything since.

I haven't annoyed my wife (at least not enough to get her to say anything) since ski season ended.

Does that count?

I forgot another accomplishment. It kind of fits into a hot streak.

Back in mid 01 I purchased a GM car. All was well until I started to go through steering racks and other items such as dimming headlights and an A/C compressor that would kick in and out so rough that I tried to keep the windows open instead of using the A/C, the car stumbled and ran rough becuase it constantly misfired on cylinder #3. There was over 30,000 misfire codes stored in the car's computer. Basically the entire ignition and related components were replaced over the 14 months. I went through 3 steering racks in 14 months / 30,000 miles and the other issues mentioned above and the best was the headlight switch nearly melting. The only item resolved was the headlight switch. They put close to $7,000 of warranty repairs in the 14 months of ownership. The next steering rack, which I needed was $1,800. Mind you this was a cheap $16,000 car.

After numerous trips and tows to dealership(s) for repairs, I wanted a buyback from GM. Well I filed (Lemon Law) with CT's DMV and was turned down because I bought the car in MA so I had to file in the state of MA.

Once I forwarded copies of the paperwork and a case number, I received a call from GM and they made me an offer, a very generous one!

I rec'd the price I paid for the car less the mile deduction per the state law. It was about $600 more than the KBB trade in value. As an incentive to stay in the GM family, the promotion for 03 model cars back in November of 02 was $3,000 rebate or 0% financing.

1. I took delivery of my new vehicle at the actual dealer's cost. Not the bogus one, but the real cost. Could not sell a new one to me at anything but as they made a profit on me for my 01 GM product according to the buyback rule.

2. I rec'd $3,000 off of the actual dealer price.

3. I also rec'd 0% financing for 5yrs.

4. The catch was I had to get a vehicle on the dealer's lot and could not order to get the #2 and #3 combination. Fortunatley it is a rather big company and they worked to find one on one of their dealerships to transfer to this lot.

I still have the 03 vehicle and like it and have had minimal issues with it. Much better than the 01 model from the same make! :D

lucky streak

On July 4 I found my "buddy" at the Warren (VT) Fourth of July and won an ipod shuffle. The same day I lost my cellphone and found it in a dumpster by having a friend call the number. The preceding week I won 2 Red Sox tickets. That was a good streak over 4 days. Bought a megabucks ticket (in fact someone gave me a dollar at the parade to buy them one). No luck. Earlier in the year our F250 burned up parked in front of our house. In the middle of the night (one of those Ford cruise control switches we assume). The house did not catch fire and we got a great settlement on the loss.

This week has been GREAT!!!

After some trouble leaving Boston, we got up here to VT to find:

1. Cooler temps and nice sleeping weather. Last week was gorgeous!

2. My parents were ON TIME to help us out. Much appreciated! The place is AWESOME...quiet and yet so close to everything!

3. Got the cars all transfered to VT and inspected almost painlessly.

4. Got to VLS and picked up my NEW computer...was third in line. Got home, got our broadband and cable up and running...checked my E-mail and saw that my computer was 'supposed' to have been backordered... Ironically, I was using mine to read the message.

5. Great weather and great time hiking Monroe!

6. Great classmates and luck getting settled in!

Two Alpine Zone wins last spring.

...but now luck has turned, no money...they decided not to pay us until Sept 8. eventhough we started this week...cutbacks at school have increased my class size significantly...staff reductions have eliminated the aide (special ed.)

All summer, and I know because of frequent doctor's appointments for my shoulder (post surgery) and a pulled achillies tendon, my BP has been in the 110/70 range. Today, after just a couple days back at school it was 146/88...think it might be stress???

Either retire from teaching and find a new line of work  or develope a new attitude...

Thankfully, most good teachers don't take this advice although nobody could blame them if they did. Teaching becomes more stressful with each passing year.

I speak only from my days as an instructor; high expectations from parents and students, little support to reach those goals.

My stress is not caused by the kids. I love what I do. My stress is caused by the political and administrative garbage! I'll be fine once the kids are back next week.

It's things like what they did today that send me reeling. Today, they went into my classroom while we were in a meeting and removed all of the desks. In their place they put one 8'X 2' table and one 3'X 3' table. There were 8 chairs squashed in around the bigger table and 4 around the other table (Not even enough places/chairs for my largest class and very little space for each student to work.) I was told that I could have a couple of the students sit at my desk and get a couple more chairs around each table.

Now, I teach special needs students...at least 5 on my list are behaviorally disordered, they all have learning disabilities and organizational problems. There are 3 classrooms set up with 30 desks each that only have classes in them one period a day(all different periods), one room would have been fine shared by all 3 classes.

I will make do, I always do, but I am NOT real happy right about now.

Wife takes the old car out, gets hit by a tractor trailer which results in said vehicle getting totaled. Wife was not totaled. This happens literally days before I was ready to plunk down good dollars on new muffler system and 4 new tires. I run out and buy new car which is just as serviceable but gets 12 mpg better gas mileage. Gas prices then go up to astronomical levels. I gripe like everyone else, but I could be griping even more. I feel lucky.

Glad to hear your wife wasn't totaled! I've had vehicles that I wished people would hit so I could get a new one, but they never do... :(
