I know Greg brought this topic up a while back and nobody responded, but I wonder if someone here has since skied Mt. Bohemia. http://www.mtbohemia.com/extreme.html

It looks like a smaller version of Jay Peak. Can anyone comment on how "extreme" it really is? How about crowds and snow quality? Worth checking out if I am ever in the area?

900' vert and some pretty cool looking terrain. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. Now all they need is a triple falline and the place would rock... ;)

This brings up an interesting question. Do you think there is room for another (besides MRG) ski area in the NE that caters specifically to advanced skiers? Would marketing a ski area as "advanced", "expert", or "extreme" work well here? The more important question is there are venture capitalists here that would finance the AlpineZone.com Extreme Ski Area?

The permitting would be the hard part........

I think the whole permitting aspect would make the addition of a new ski area in VT or anywhere in the NE very difficult. The contingency plan would be costly and I doubt you'd ever get the investment capital back out of it, especially for an expert/advanced area only.

That said, I think I know how I would do it and I have a sneaking suspicion that some aspect of it may be in the works. The way to handle it is thru the opening of Sugarbushes Slidebrook basin to a larger amount of skiers and somehow designating this area and the backside of SB as an advanced, off-piste, area. It would have really no infrastructure short of basic trimming to open lines and maintain the forests and have a solid environmental maintenance program. There is a whole lot more to it than this, but I think to add some pseduo lift served expert to NE, this would be an interesting way...................so what do ya say Win...............is one of those new bombardier cats gonna be for opening up the backside as VT's first cat served terrain................

I asked the same question before in another forum and I got about 2 answers over the course of 2 years. Mt. Bohemia is on the Michigan penninsula and is very isolated...I've been up that way in the summer during a fishing trip. There aren't alot of folks who live up there.

It looks like fun and I would go try it out if I was ever near there, which is pretty unlikely. It's a beautiful area and the Porcupine National Forest is worth seeing even if you don't ski. It's the last remaining stand of wild Hemlocks in the continental US.

I seem to recall an article last season in one of the skiing mags about this place. I don't remember much else about it, though.
