It's the only open source software I see ported for windows that can perform non linear video editing...

However, it was developed for 3d computer animation, and I get the feeling using it to add music and create a short video from clips and stills with basic effects is a bit like using a 12 pound sledge hammer to drive a thumb tack.

No matter, though, after reading the wiki it looks to be pretty user friendly. I just want something free, without the memory leaks that people report Windows Movie Maker suffers from. I think I may learn to enjoy some of the more advanced features Blender can offer anyway.

Anyone else have any experience with it?

Let us know how it works for you. WMM is definitely a memory hog on my machine...

Video editing is a real short coming in open source software. Lots of great free software out there for a variety of applications, but video editing falls into that broad graphics arts and design umbrella under which you really do get what you pay for. Video editing is part of the reason I still dual boot into windows on occasion.

Damn, that is pretty impressive for an open source software graphics package. Like you said though, looks like a 3D package. Couldn't find any screen shots that showed a non-linear video editing GUI. I looked and couldn't find any open source video editing software that met my needs, though I never came across blender in my searches.

There are clips of the VSE on the wiki, but their server seems to be down at the moment. I'll like you up tomorrow if it's working then. Looks pretty intuitive from what I can tell.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Pray that tomorrow never comes.
