Crapuweather has a headline about a possible modified arctic outbreak next week after the rain this weekend. NOAA is forecasting temps in the upper 30's for highs next week with lows in the low 20's for the Killington region.

This way any snow that survives the rain will be hard as a rock:roll:

Sweet. Hopefully Mt. Washington gets some snow. I still got hope for this season. May 1997, May 1997, May 1997!

The Mount Washington Auto Road is already cleared to the 5 mile mark according to their website due to the lack of snowpack this spring. They may open up to timberline next week, but somehow I think mother nature will interfere with those plans:

Going to timberline stinks. There is no where to park, so it is pretty much useless. It supposed to open top to bottom May 7th which will be awsome and probably provide pretty good skiing until the end of may.

That may be a possibility for me the weekend of May 6-7th if the auto road is open at that time. Perhaps Bretton Woods may still be open, but slushy green trails are not my thing.

I really don't know if I'm in the kind of shape to hike up a mountain. I never tried it. What kind of conditions are are up there in May?

depends on the day. it could be corn, it could be frozen solid, it could be fresh snow with a chance to slide. depends what the weather has done recently. snowfields or great gulf are the two options up there. great gulf is not on my radar, but i would love to do some laps on a couple hundred verts of snowfields.

Me and my dad would defiantly be down for giving you a ride. How come GG isn't on the radar? scared?;-) Looks awsome to me. A 1,200 vertical feet skinny gully that is 40-45 degrees. Sounds awsome to me. 2 warm up runs in the east snowfields, then one run in the GG= one awsome day. (I will admit pipeline scares though)

All you do is get of your car ski down then hike back to you car. You can't be in that bad of shape, can you?

Not too bad, could be better. Did start the gym thing again. Things get a little tougher after 40 though.

actually, yes. i respect my limits, i need more experience and likely extra equipment like cramps and an ice ax before doing either of the GG gullies. there is no room for error, and unlike tux or GoS, you can't simply put on your skis and start down if you aren't feeling the climb. you are completely committed once you are in. a serious under taking i would like to work up to eventually.

Yeah, I get what your saying. But on a warm blue bird day I think it would be fine. Sorta like this day:

IMO as long as you have hiking boots and a bunch of water you can always escape to the bottom if the weather turns horrible real quick.(though it would suck having your car stuck up top) So what I'm trying to say is that I had a warm day with no percip in the forcast at all, and not one cloud in the sky I would try it.(pretty much like repeat days of both of my days on mt. wash)

i have read that is an absolute horrid bush whack. i would never descend something like that thinking that hiking out of GG was a back up plan. that would be an absolute emergency plan.

Oh crap. I didn't know it was a bushwack, I thought it was pretty well used trail. Also though if the snow froze up couldn't you just hike the GG trail up and out(or just scrabble up the rocks?)

i guess it would depend how far the snow pack goes down to. iirc, the GG trail goes by spaulding lake, but i doubt you could ski down that far. GG trail is pretty steep and not an easy hike, i guess that would be an option.
