Dont get all defensive, the east is always going to lose the battle in terms of snow quantity and quality, so dont waste your breath.

I was just commenting on how different it is between here and there. 100 inch base is a shitload of snow. I dont think a mtn in the east hit a 100 inch base all season, let alone close with one, and that is considering that the Teton range (Ill include Jackson as well) had one of their worst snow years to date this year. Says alot if you ask me. Here, even with the april snows, were still on 20-30 inch bases, and fighting for each sucessive weekend. Imagine how late the ghee could stay open if they so desired, June? July? I bet if they tried, and took things to the extreme like eastern resorts, in a good snow year they could make it year round.

FWIW, Mansfield stake is at 81". Otherwise I agree with what you've said.

I wasnt talking smack, so chill. Real hard to tell tone on email. One of my points was that it doesnt really matter what the base is. Do you really need a 101 inch base to ski. The east is looking at 30 inches and two feet of fresh on top. East and West close at the same time.....I would feel a heck of alot worse if I was out West and watched those great places close with 10 ft. of snow. Everyone relax, i apolgize if my tone was taken wrong.

I think we are doing quite well right now from April. A lot of places have closed with a significant amount of snow still left.

In the keep it real mode, as you mentioned JH had a mediocre snow year. BTW, they both close due to lack of business, neither has any wildlife issues do worry about.

This year the annual, PPP race at JH(this old fart competed in 13 of them) had to cancel the xc part due to lack of snow. Not the first time it has happened. I just checked the JH cams and they couldn't continue to be open if they wanted to. The lower half of the mountain is bare of snow. You can check out the base cam and see that the Hobacks are totally bare.

I am kinda surprised that Targhee has such a big base with only 366" of total snowfall. The Bush is close to 300" in total snowfall but doesn't have anything close to that on their natural snow trails. I know about the diference in elevations and all that but it has been unseasinably warm out there the past few weeks. This is the web cam at Teton Pass, few miles south and alittle higher from where GT measures their depth, I don't see 96" there.

I guess my point is that just because Targhee has alot of snow doesn't mean all the resorts out west are in the same boat, Just like the east. Diferent regions get diferent amounts of snow. Based on averages tho I wouldn't be surprised if GT gets 600" next year. The idea that the west always has better conditions than the east is a myth. Alot of people learned that lesson this season.

Hopefully, here in the east we can look forward to two straight good snow years. Hasn't happened to often in the last 10 years or so. Also, I would be willing to bet that the west gets dumped on next season as well. :D

Targhee is a great mountain, and there are 2 reasons why you will never (or should never) worry about bare spots in the spring before they close.

1) unlike JH, the ground there is grassy and not very rocky. They can open on a small base like a lot of eastern resorts. Jackson needs a pretty ridiculous amount of snow to open everything. So they closed with a 101 base, they could close with a 30 inch base and have great spring conditions still.

2) The base of targhee is really high, its like 8,000ft with the summit above 10,000. It is generally a cold mountain, so the snow they get, they do a great job holding...
