I just got this set of skis from a friend that are brand new and still in the package. i want to start skiing but im not sure if this would be a good set of skis to begin with. What I guess I need to know is if this would be a good set of skis for me or if i should try and get another pair that are easier for me to begin with. If I should start with another set then where can i sell or exchange the set I already have. Any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks

Get a new set. Those are relics of a bygone era and even in thier day would not be a ski for a beginner.

Those are the old Bill Johnson boards correct?

They made a number of versions of those skiis, some of them quite radical for their day. All in all, though, the earlier poster is right. Find another pair, you'll enjoy the sport more.

Bill didn't race Slalom.

Actually, I would love to have them today. The Atomic Arc was a great ski, light, quick but stiff. It's the only Austrian ski I liked. A good skier would make mincemeat out of that bygone era statement.

I didn't mean to say that in the "straight" ski era they wearn't a good ski (although nothing could match the VO Slalom) A slalom race ski is never a good ski for a beginner and with whats available today even for very little $$$ there are many better choices to be had.

Right, he did. He also made some very interesting comments about the World tour which I would have used by now, but I had forgot his name. He stated that he wanted to embarass the Austrians and that was why he raced to win. He used their skiis so that there would not be any claim that his advantage was one of Equipment. Thanks for the post.

Duuude...Bad Boy Bill Johnson won the DH on a set of red Atomic RS's. The RS stands for Reisenslalom, or Giant Slalom - even though they were DH skis. We Americans interpreted RS to mean RED SLED, and it was a very cool ski. If the SL's are the same age, they'd be blue. A good find if they really are new, undrilled, but if you're a beginner they'd give you one huge lesson in character-building. Make sure the health insurance is paid up....

Duhawk if you want to ski ,RENT . Rent from a ski shop near you , this will save time at the mt. Also after a few times skiing go to another shop for rentals, this may give you a chance to try another brand,Rent for the remander of this year and most of next, then you will know if you like it and want to make the commitment to buy. By late feb early march skis go on sale and you will have a better idea of what you want. Dont go with the hottest or most expencev skis. you will be an intermediate skiier at best and a good shop will steer you in the right direction

Just what we need some wiseguy explaining his own posts by given quite redundant translations. There's a big difference from the skiis you saw as RS and those Bill used. More than likely he went into the warehouse and picked out his ski from a special group set aside at the factory. They then put on the graphics to make you turkeys think you can buy the same ski from the thieves at Herman's. By the way, Kastle made a terribly bad-ass ski when the Super-G was introduced. If you ever run into a pair, bagged and undrilled, detroy them.

Heh Heh. (how to say this without getting the moderators po'd?) Beswift sure got her panties in a bunch. Skiing with you must be a hoot. Any foo knows about race stuff having civilian graphics - you don't have to look any further than NASCAR. As far as selecting their skis, the top racers may choose their own, but with alot of help from their technicians. On race day, generally the tuning tech makes the call which pair should be used based on which pair will likely run fastest on the given course, considering snow conditions, temperature, structure, wax, the skis themselves, etc. A downhiller at the World Cup level can easily have dozens of pairs of skis to choose from for any given race. Within the racing world, Bill Johnson's tuner got almost as much credit for the victory as Bill did. Anyway, that victory helped catapult Atomic to huge status in the U.S., where weenies like me wanted skis that looked like Bill's. And it just so happened that those skis rocked. I'm rambling, but Beswift knows squat.....and if I ever find a pair of Kastle SG's I'll be given quite reduntant translations to detroy them....Hah Hahhhh!

Just to clarify. The Olympic Downhill that Bill Johnson won was held in 1984. Duhawk, if you have a set of Atomic SL's from that era, you should NOT try to learn how to ski on them. They're too long, too straight and too stiff. They would be a good find as collector's items. And, Swifty, by the way, Johnson DID compete in the Slalom, as part of the Alpine Combined. (He just wasn't very good at it.) Sorry to have to correct you, Buddy.
